Lately most of the music I buy is dvd concerts. I would like to enjoy them in my car as well. I try persuading MTV to 'pimp my ride' but haven’t heard from them, yet;) My other option is to rip the audio from the DVD and put it on a regular CD. I came across one of those freeware ripper programs but the result was a poor quality mp3. I could not figure out why the quality was so bad. Anyone here had try any of those programs? If the programs work I’m willing to pay for it.

Yeah, that may be an option and would be very cool but I just don’t want to make that kind of investment on my car.

Grab DVD decrypter to ripp the DVD vobs.
Use DVD2AVI as a file server.
Use Headac3he to demux the audio into a suitable format.

Here's a method for copying DVD to a KVCD/KDVD format. All you need to do is strip the audio. I've never only used the Audio but the audio using this method has always been very good for movies/concerts I've backed up and should work great for your application. Much of it depends on the settings choosen in Headac3he which is explained in the method. Although, it may take a bit of experimenting...

Thanks again jag, it worked great. I did James Taylos DVD concert and it sound great. I went very fast through the processes and end up with a huge .5GB .wav file of the concert. I’ll figure it later…

Someone else's advice

Be sure to strip the stereo VOB track, not the 5.1 track. A simple method that works OK is to then play the VOB track in DVD player software, while recording it as a .wav file with Creative Wave Studio (came with soundblaster card). You can then use Wave Studio to break the big .wav file into separate files for each song, then burn to CD. Result sounds good, though the method is somewhat primitive.
