Where are the speakers placed with a projector?
I would like to hear / see how they are placed.

Thanks
David

Depends how big your screen is. If possible, keep the bottom of your screen up off the floor by 2 feet or so, then mount your center channel on a stand below the screen.

David, when there's a projector setup and therefore no TV on the floor taking up the space, my view is that a speaker such as the M22 or an even larger one identical to the left/right fronts should be used. Identical speakers across the front, all vertically oriented of course, are an ideal setup better than a horizontal center.

I am going through the same decision because I am about 1 more evening away from drywalling the ceiling, and I need to figure out where the center speaker wire should go. After many questions and pointers from "audio experts" I was told that the center speaker above the screen works just as well as below the screen. Just make sure that the speaker is pointed downward directly towards the listening spot. Just like you would point the center upward just a bit if it was 2 feet off of the ground on a shelf.

After many discussions with my wife on the layout of things, we are going to put our center on the ceiling above the screen. Know this, though... The ceiling where the screen goes is actually about 8" lower than the rest of the ceiling due to the house's main ductwork being there and being framed around.

Hope that this helps...

My dedicated basement HT is in progress, just finished the drywall on the ceiling, sorry beat you to it Nick Anyway, I built a stage out of 2 x 8's below my screen and the mains will be on each side of the screen, the center below the screen in the center , and the sub I haven't decided yet. My rear Qs8's will be behind the listening area, about the same distance apart as the mains, and my left/right surrounds will be between the 1st and 2nd elevated rows. All surrounds will be hanging about a foot below the ceiling...My Sanyo Z2 projector is slightly behind the 2nd row of seating....

Here's a peek at mine....

100" Carada Brilliant White.
Wall mounted VP150 just below the screen.
An M60Ti at either side.

Behind you are two wall mounted QS8s and two ceiling mounted M2Is.

Whoa, that's VERY nice.

I would guess that you don't live in the SF Bay Area, having a theatre like that...

ke3qz - That's one hell of a good looking theater. Did you do that yourself or go w/ professionals?

Posted By: ke3qz Re: Projector Where do you place center? - 11/21/04 02:21 PM
It was/is a DIY effort.
Carpet and drywall was contracted out but I handled everything else.
Spent a lot of time here and at AVS Forums learning everything I could...then I jumped in!!

Thanks for the kind words!!

Randy, like most of us interested in this hobby, I've perused the photos of tons of home theaters. I think yours in among the best I've ever seen. A really tasteful job. And, the fact you did most of it yourself adds to its appeal.

What is the purpose of the two alcoves, like the one with the Axioms boxes in it. Equipment racks?

WOW! Thanks for the very kind words.

The alcoves will eventually house my DVD collection and assorted nick-nacks. I've got to get some time in the shop to build the shelves...can't stop watching movies long enough!!

The equipment rack is along the side wall, to the rear of the seats.....

The rack opens into a closet that is accessible from the laundry room...easy access to the rear of the equipment was an absolute requirement!!

Great job IDing the Axiom boxes!! They've since been moved to LONG term storage in the garage.

Hello Ke3qz, is that a yamaha receiver I see? What model is it. Just being curious. Thanks, Michael.

Yep. Yamaha HTR-5790.
Originally wanted the RVX-2400 or -1400 but found that the difference between the RVX and HTR series was mainly marketing and fluff.

Very happy with the 5790!

I too have read that the 5790 is essentially the same as the 1400. Can the 5790 show OSD with component video? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Thanks for your help.

Off hand I can't tell you.
I have my DVD (DVI and component) player and Sat Receiver (Svideo)hooked direct to the projector. The 5790 occupies the composite line for OSD during setup, YPAO, etc.
I'll try to dig up the manual tonight and see what it says about OSD on component.

Michael, yes it can; see p.56 of the manual, especially "Component OSD".

Randy, that is one SWEEEEEEEAT home theatre you've built for yourself. You should be very proud of it!

Ditto Ajax comments, that's about the nicest I've seen.

Just curious, what are the room dimensions and what are you running for speakers other than the Qs8's?

Cheers, Jag

I appreciate your help John.
Posted By: ke3qz Re: Projector Where do you place center? - 11/22/04 10:14 AM
Thanks Jag!

The room dimensions are 15'X19'.
We sit about 12.5' from the 100" Carada Brilliant White.
The seats are Lane Majecsitc Theater Seats (which I love!).

The 7.1 speaker suite includes:
Fronts M60Ti
Center VP150
Side Surrounds QS8 (wall mounted)
Rear Surrounds M2i (ceiling mounted)
Sub HSU STF-3

Here's the floor plan...

We added a third chair but other than that the floor plan is fairly accurate.

Thanks again for the kind words!!

Wow, really, really nice. I like how the speakers disappear against the black background; I know my wife would LOVE that.
For some time now I was searching on the net a nice way to disguise my black m60s. Definitely your HT sold me on the idea of getting a projector instead of one of those DLP TVs. Thanks for posting the pics

Ke3qz - How are you mounting the M2s? Are you using the Axiom mounts or have you found a good alternative? Pics would be great.

BTW - You have me wondering about painting my back wall black. My M60s stand out a lot more than that up against my wall. I've been trying to avoid it, but the way they disappear in your picture have me thinking hard.
Posted By: ke3qz Re: Projector Where do you place center? - 11/23/04 03:49 PM
M2s are mounted using an Omnimount....I had to turn the speakers 90 degrees from their intended orientation. That is to say, the side of the speaker is parallel to the ceiling. They sound great!
I'm at work now but i'll grab a picture or two when I get home and post tonight.

I love the black wall....the screen and its felt border appears to float in free space. The M60s do almost disappear, especially when the lights are out at movie time. My only fear with the ultra flat black that I used is dust and fingerprints over the long haul...if you so much as look at the black it leaves a smudge!
