I have been using my av receiver to handle my video switching. Before I set up the Denon 1083, I was using my old Yamaha. I was starting to have some problems with the picture breaking up with the Yammie, and now it's doing the same thing with the Denon. I disconnected the s-video cable from the receiver and ran it straight to the TV from the satellite receiver, and presto-chango the problem is fixed, but now I don't have any means of handling the switching. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Hi Bruce,

I don't think I can help much here since I don't use the receiver as a video switcher. As poorly done as the manual is, the first few pages do a credible job with pictures showing the connections. Have you looked through those?

Did you check the other cable in the equation? (ie, the one from the satellite reciever to the Denon). Also, are you doing any conversion in the receiver, or is it just doing switching?

I knew I could count on you guys. I haven't figured out the conversion thing yet, so I'm using the switching feature. I'm starting to think that heat may be an issue with this problem. I have/had the receiver(s) in a 2 shelf TV stand. The top shelf has the Directv receiver while the bottom shelf has the AVR. I think the combination of the 2 heat creating sources may be causing this. My reason for thinking this is that it doesn't do it immeadiately. It seems to take a few days, slowly, but surely, the picture starts to flicker and eventually disappears altogether. I'm going to move the Denon to a well ventilated stand, next to the TV stand and keep my fingers crossed. Maybe some new cables will be entered into the equation as well.

Yeah, my TiVo was acting really funny before I got it some more space to breathe. Heat is the ENEMY!

It took a couple of hours, but I've got everything switched over. Man, the Denon is a heavy bugger. Everything is operating normally now, so I'll hold off on the new cables for a few days. The boy is watching The Deadly Spawn, one of those grade C- horror flicks they made back in the seventies. This is a real stinker. This is enough to make a DVD player sick.

Don't know what tivo you have but many of the Series 1 D*tivos ventilate from the bottom.

The Series2 standalones also ventilate on the bottom. Stupid design... I've got mine raised on 4 Atari 2600 cartridges.

Way to put those 2600 carts to use!

I think those 4 are actually all dupes, busted, or games so bad I wouldn't play them. Although I'm pretty sure I kept out the E.T. for historical significance, as I think it was probably the worst game ever created.
