i just bought this tv less than a a month ago (46 inch crt hitachi hdtv widescreen). it's my first foray into hdtv. i love it.

but i just noticed a day or two ago that the right side of the tv has a slight beige discoloration when the picture is certain shades of white or grey. it's odd that when it;s green, blue, purple, black, orange, or whatever else, the discoloration is gone. it's only on soft whites and greys.

is my tv already broken? i know it's not the input, it happens on cable and with dvd;s. i also tried moving it away from certain things. could i jst be some weird intereference? i don't really feel like bringing it anywhere for fixing, you know what i mean. it's 160 pounds!

thanks,
Ravi
Are all your speakers shielded? Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

You also may want to try the internal color calibration. On my rear projection there is a "color magic" option that will ballance out all the colors in case they may have become misaligned. Not sure if your set has this.

Also may want to throw a call into the manufacturers customer service center. If they are a good company then they may have tech support to walk you though an easy fix or point you in the right direction.

Good luck.
Ravi,
Don't think twice, it's less than a month old, this is the store's problem not yours. Get them to replace it or take it back.

I bought a HDTV just before Christmas, so did a friend of mine. In fact we went together on our purchase to get a better deal.

Mine is still working fine, and his has been replaced.

Don't waste a second fooling around with it, get the store involved.

Boy I"m glad I bought a 12lb Sanyo Z2 projector, much easier to send in for support

anyway, do you have kids? One of my kids flashed a magnet next to the lower right side of my Toshiba 32" HDTV, and now on certain background colors, I see a discoloration, it is out of warranty though....

fordprefect,

i likely will try to get them to take it back if it's not an easy fix. i was hoping it was.

too bad tv's don't have a degauss feature like monitors do, i'm sure that's the problem.

by the way, i moved it away from my electronics even more, and it seems to have made it go away by %50, but it's still there. i may also try calling hitachi to see if i can easily fix it. that way, i'll also learn how to fix it if it happens aftter the warranty is gone

no kids so no magnet was there, thankfully. i know my speakers are shilded because i used to have a 27 inch tv before and it never got affected

any other ideas?

thanks everyone, i'm actually quite worried about it now.
You moved your electronics away from the screen and the discolouration went away by 50%? It sounds like shielding the problem, or at least partly cause of shielding. How far away are your speakers now from the TV (including centre channel)?

Paul
Is there anything on any adjacent walls, or on the opposite side of the wall from the TV. I have heard refrigeraters and other appliances causing similar problems?
the center sits on the tv. i mvoed it and it didnt change

the m80's are about 3-4 feet away from them

i do have a up about... 1 foot behind it.
should i try moving that?

if the discoloration is still slightly there and it was a shielding problem, is there an easy way to get it fixed? just needs degaussing?
I don't know much about shielding and such stuff other than what I've read (I've got a projector). I just picked up on your moving speakers away and the discolouration being reduced.

From what I've read, your speakers, at 3-4 feet, are more than far enough away (especially given they are shielded). You could try the up, but then again it may just be the TV. Axiom says the centre channel is particularly well shielded as it is designed for placement on TV's.

I'm now thinking like the others, you may have a bad TV and best return it while the return period is in effect.
Randy, I didn't think that Ravi's problem was due to discoloration due to magnetism, so I didn't suggest anything to him. Yours certainly is though, and all recent TVs have built-in degaussers which operate for about a minute after the TV is turned on from a cold start. So turn on for a minute or two, turn off for at least 20 minutes to cool off and repeat until the coloration is gone. Ravi, you can also try this, although it might not be what your problem is.
You could also get a degaussing coil from a place like radioshack. It would probbably come with instructions how to use it. If you do go that route, dont be shocked at the effect it will have on the screen. Its normal.
Hi, Ravi, Here's sompthin' silly:

I notice that when I'm way off axis, like when a guest is sittin' in MY CHAIR, that the far side of the screen is off color in relation to the side that I'm sitting towards. (Exactly as you described-beige!) I know that's not it, but just had to mention it. Well then, how 'bout:

Is the problem still there when you return to the default settings?(don't forget to write down your personal settings first!)

How 'bout when you deactivate the automatic color correcting circuit?

Are you still in "Torch Mode"?

Not likely to help, but have you tried either an automatic or manual convergence?

Are you sending the signals directly to the TV, or routing them all thru the recviever?

My understanding is(Oh gads here we go again) that it takes a good month for the crts to, um..settle in, and then it's safe to have the set properly aligned. The dealer may send someone out to be sure the set is within proper operating parameters-Yeah, moving them is a chore! Know what you mean, my Mits is a whopping 330 lbs!!

Good luck! If you're like me, the first time you see something out of the ordinary, you lock in and track it...forever!!(til it's fixed)
Rich.
hey guys,

thanks for all your suggestions.

here's an update.

I did move stuff around and it seemed to have diminished, but what i noticed was that it was just the viewing distance and angle that made it look different. i have put everything back and it still looks the same.

i read the warranty card and do you what is says!??!
IN HOME SERVICE - you can also buy extended in home warranties.
i'll call hitachi in the next day or two once i feel better (i've been really sick since the weekend), and see if they'll come here and fix it. i doubt it's a magnetic problem because the degaussing is not helping and neither is changing the settings back to defaults and all. i think the tube is just off.
Hi, Ravi;

Sorry that you're not feeling well and hope you feel better soon!

Also sorry that your TV isn't any better today either, however, Hitachi has a good reputation and will surely take good care of your TV when they arive.

I suspect that you'll both be feeling better soon!!
(Now if we could just get extended warranties on Ourselves!!!)

Get well soon!
Rich.
thanks Rich
Welcome, indeed.
