I know the frequency response is 37 – 22 kHz +/- 3
And I’m using my crossover at 100 Hz for my
Vp 100 and QS-8. Now I don’t want to crossover
my M6o’s at 100 Hz, so I set them to large on my
Denon. By setting them to “large”, they are now getting
the whole signal.
Will the frequencies below 37 Hz “ hurt” the speaker?
Will it distort signals below the frequency response?

Also has anyone raised his or her mains? I’m thinking of
Putting my M60’s on small pedestals, maybe 8 – 10
Inches. Is there any input to if this might be a bad idea?
I recall someone doing this, but I couldn’t find the thread
through the search.

Have you tried setting all speakers to small, and setting the crossover at 80hz? Can't comment on raising the 60's as I don't do that...:)

I had my M60's sitting on approximately 7" stands at the other house...to raise the mids / woofers above the level of the arm of the couch on one side...It helped to make sure that the arm was not absorbing all of those frequencies from those drivers...Could hear a difference after raising them...

The stands I was using (Radio Shack of 20 years ago or so) also tilted the speakers back a bit.

May try it in the new place (once I unbox them again) with stands and without and see if there is a difference in SQ from straight on, no furniture in the way...

You might want to try putting them on a set of cinder blocks as an experiment to see if it makes a difference before purchasing or constructing risers...

Setting all speakers to small and setting the cross-over to 60-80hz is the simplest solution. (Assuming you have a nice sub)

Regarding putting the M60's on stands. I did it, and liked the result. Give it a shot. Though I agree, use something cheap or free to test it, before purchasing or building something. You may not find it worth the trouble or expense.

if you have no kids or animals at home, the stands might be okay. rattled mine last weekend when the vac cord went slightly under the speaker; what a rush.

Yes Randy, that's how i have been running them.... but after all the discussion on crossover frequency, I'd like to run them large so I can crossover my VP-100 and QS-8s at 100 HZ. (just tinkering )

I believe a number of people run their M60s set to "large" with the sub just helping out with the lowest notes.

The only risk of damage I can think of is if you play with the volume cranked up there will be more LF energy going through the receiver so a greater chance of driving the amp into clipping and hurting your tweeters. This would be pretty easy to hear, though...

Don't think you're going to be able to hurt the woofers, unless you have a MUCH bigger amp than we think

Now that I think about it, your logic (running center/surround crossover at 100 so not wanting to run mains in Small) is probably why other people are running their 60s in Large.

I used to run my m60's as large while watching movies with the LFE's going to the sub. My room is 13x18x9. Never blew up anything.

On the other hand if your are planning on using your fronts as large with the lfe(dot 1)channel directed to your m60's I wouldn't get carried away with the volume control.

Nowadays I run my fronts as small crossed over at 60 or 80 and let the sub do the heavy stuff.

There's no harm at all running your M60's as large and playing them as loud as you want. Frequencies under 37hz simply can't be reproduced by the M60's. The spec is telling you what the speakers are capable of doing, not a recommendation of what to send them. It won't hurt them.

Thank you Craig for the info. I was under the impression that heavy use of LFE's could do harm to the speakers.

I guess with a big amp and the bass turned up to +10 you could probably do some pretty good damage -- but again the bigger risk is driving the amp into clipping and frying a midrange or tweeter as a result. When you run in "small" the amp doesn't have to carry those low signals so less power is required, ie you can play louder without clipping...

Thanks for the replies. I've been running my 60's as large now for a couple of days and it sounds good, but I don't push too hard. ( I don't want to clip the denon 4802r).
Maybe one of those outlaw bass management systems are in order!

Just a guess, but unless you have bass boosted a lot via eq or tone controls I think your ears will give out before the 4802 runs out of power. You mostly do driver damage when the system is playing so loud that you can't make out the sound quality any more... that's what you want to avoid.
