Hi All, I have a few questions to ask.

1. Could anyone tell me what would be the proper setup for the 500 that will be used with a Yamaha RX V2600.
I must have set the sub about three different ways and always sounds low.

2.Does anyone know how to delete the auto setup settings from the yamaha rx v2600 and mem. setings?

3. one last thing every once in awhile I here poping coming from the sub, what would cause this?

Are talking about volume? How did you calibrate the sound level of the subwoofer? What are you using to test your subwoofer volume(DVD, music).

How do you have the subwoofer setup right now?

I have my subwoofer volume at about 6 o'clock, and the volume is plenty loud.

Vol. seems to low.

I first set the vol. to 9 o'clock for setup I then set the crossover to bypass then trim at flat.

Sound was from auto setup from my receiver, Yamaha RX V2600.

What should my settings be set at?

There may be another issue here. Possibly a simpler one? Is the sub connected to your receivers LFE/Sub out via an RCA connection, to the Sub's Line IN?

Verify the settings in the receiver show the Sub is present/connected so that it will send a signal out to it.

Is the light on the back of the EP500 green?

Can you run the yamaha receiver's test tone that goes from speaker to speaker, and verify you do hear the sub working.

Just checking some basics, as 6-7 o'clock is plenty loud for most of us with the EP500.

If you are sure you are getting signal out of your sub, but it just seems a little "low" then turn it up to your liking. Everyone is different. Sorry I don't have experience with the Yammy 2600 to give you more detail.

My settings on the sub:
Trim set to flat
Crossover set to bypass
Volume set to about 8 o'clock position
Phase 0

Receiver settings:
All speakers set to small
Crossover set to 80hz
Sub level -2dB

My guess is you don't have your receiver set right. Can you describe how you have your receiver settings, for ex., speakers (small/large), crossover setting, dB level for the sub. The Auto Setup should do a pretty good job, I assume you placed the mic in the primary listening position about ear level.

There should be a User Preset option to reset the receiver back to the factory defaults, look at page 101 in the manual, however, I don't think this will reset the autosetup settings. Each time you rerun the autosetup should clear out the previous settings.

You need to describe the popping sound to us more, are you using sub coaxial to hook to the receiver?

Have you tried movies with lots of LFE, or are you trying music? Please provide more information.

Randy

Hi,

I have the same speakers as you do, a Yamaha receiver RX V 2600.

Here are some of the settings that I found on the receiver;
Speaker Levels.
Sub -3.5
Front L +4
Front R +3.5
Center +.5
SL +2
SR +4
PL +2
PR +3

Speaker size;

Surronds - small
Center - small
Front - large

Base crossover is at 160HZ.

On the sub itself here are the settings;

Vol. where max is at 2 o'clock and min. is at 4 o'clock. I have this set at 8 o'clock (260 degrees).

Phase = 0
Crossover is at BYPASS
Trim is at FLAT.

As I said before at times I would here a poping sound (perhaps the vol. is set to high)?

What should the settings be set at?

Thanks,

John

One other thig I forgot to mention before is when I do reset the receiver the sub vol. levels do increase and if I do increase the vol. on the receiver sometimes I would here the poping sound from the sub.

Question, Is the auto setup mostly for video sound levels?

I really cant here the sub output from audio signals but the sub output has deep lows for video and are at good vol. levels.

One last question, how does the cross over levels settings work?

Two things I see that need to be changed are.

1) Set the mains to small also.

2) Set the crossover in the receiver to 80hz.

I have made the changes, is there any other changes that need to be maid?

As Wid mentioned, you have your receiver crossover set way to high, try 80hz on the receiver and leave the sub on bypass. I would also set your mains to small on the receiver.

On the volume knob on the sub, there are 4 white marks. There is one at the 9 o'clock position, I keep mine around the one just below that, which is about the 8 o'clock position. Sound like that is where you have yours, which makes sense since your receiver setting for the sub is at -3.5dB. I think mine is about -2dB, but I have a Denon so things will be a little different.

The popping sound confuses me, not sure what that was, the only thing I can think of is that you had the receiver set to 160hz, so you were sending signals to the sub higher than its frequency rating of 100hz. I don't think you can play the 500 to loud, it will play louder than a orchestra in carnegie hall.

Another thing is if you find the Center channel being to quiet during movies, you might want to bump that up a bit, I have mine a few dB's louder than my left/right speakers so I can hear the movie dialog better.

The sub primarily is for LFE (low frequency effects). That is why you set a crossover point so anything below that point for the other speakers gets sent to the sub. All the speakers have a different frequency range. 80hz is normally a good starting point, and meets THX recommendations. Some movies are better than others and will blow you away.

In regards to CD's, it really depends on the recording. The m60's do a great job in the bass category, but depending on the CD you have, there will be some LOW's coming from the sub. I have a few music DVD's that you can really hear the sub. One example is Diana Krall's Live in Paris or Live at the Montreal Jaxx Festival. The stand up bass just rocks my world.

Another issue could be your sub placement. Do you have a picture or drawing you could share with us of your setup?

Randy,
I tried your setting of -2db and 8 oclock on the sub volume and I wanted to know what did it read on your spl meter? From 15 feet away I read 93/94 on the spl. The pink noise was vibrating some glass cups in the kitchen.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: EP 500 - 01/12/06 09:14 PM
I believe from my main seating position, I'm at about 80dB during the pink noise test with my sub. I'm also about 12-15ft away from the sub. Now I suppose the 3805 could be different than the 2805? Also, my room as not carpeting or furniture yet.....Hope to shop for carpeting this weekend..

Is that including the correction factor for the RatShack meter?

Hi all,

I just want to let you know that I call Axiom about the popping sound from the ep 500, I spoke to John and told him the story and he told me to do a test for the 500 by having the output of a cd player go direct to the input of the sub and increase the vol. a bit at a time and then came the popping at the 5 o'clock position.I did this test while I was on the phone with him so he can hear it for himself.

John at Axiom is going to send me a new amp for the 500 and I will replace it myself along with return shipping.

The guys at Axiom are the Best.

Thanks,

John Mincone

Wid, not sure I'm with ya when you talk about the correction of the RS meter? Please explain, anyting I can do to get the best sound would be cool. I've just heard people like running their sub dB's a little hotter, instead of putting everything at 75dB's or whatever....

Ain't it the truth! No product is without a problem every now and then. That's not a lot of comfort if you are the one that receives the unit with a problem. However, the true measure of the company is how the problem is handled.

While Axiom isn't the only manufacturer/vendor who has returned customer service to the importance it deserves, none do it better. After so many years of enduring poor service, it is a JOY to deal with companies like Axiom. And, their just reward is the customer loyalty and trust they have earned.

(My heavens, it's a beautiful morning here today. Cold, only 28, but bright sunshine and I can hear a few crazy birds chirping outside my window. I'm a happy man this morning. )

Randy, when using the receivers pink noise to calibrate the sub you should note that the RadioShack meter has a correction factor of +3 db. So if you use 75 db for your speakers and 80 for the sub then in fact the sub is being calibrated to 83db.

RadioShack meter correction table

Thanks Wid, I was unaware of that, I used to tune everything to 75dB's, but lately have bumped up the sub to 80dB as I had heard some like to run the sub a little hotter.
Posted By: Wid Re: EP 500 - 01/15/06 11:55 PM
When you calibrate everything to 75db, including the sub, you have the sub +3 db already when using pink noise generated by the receivers test tones. When I did my music system I used 72db on the meter for the sub. Then when I did my H/T system I went with everything at 75db.
