In naughty pine for a center channel application. Fed Ex admitted they brutally tortured it as evidenced by the gouges. Axiom will be building another.

Why is it portless? How does it sound relative to the ported version?
Posted By: Mojo Re: Sphincter-free M80 - 07/17/20 04:07 PM
The ported version was too tall for the intended installation. Apparently it balances out the Model T Signatures, twin EP500s, single EP800 and side-mounted QS10s quite nicely.

Slim is now looking for horizontally-mounted rears. He's thinking M5HPs or VP160s.

Hmmm...I seem to recall these are also not as deep as the standard M80.

The M5 as horizontal are a bad idea.

Doesnt seem size is a constraint. Why not towers for rears too? We know he likes it loud.

Really though, he is putting a lot of $ into his system. Does he have a proper design? Just curious is all.

I really hope he is going towards Dolby Surround for 2ch reproduction. It is pretty Awesome!

He can't do towers in the back. They'd get in the way. Horizontal M5s, with out-board rather than in-board facing tweeters could work given his very large space.

Does Dolby Surround for 2.0 require bipolars?
Posted By: aaaaaaaaaaaaa Re: Sphincter-free M80 - 07/19/20 04:27 PM
Not required. Monopole is the dobly recommendation, but many are happy with the QS in their installs too.

Andrew made a vid on their youtube channel talking about options. I think in an evolving setup the bipole vs monopole debate is less important than other factors -like using whats is on hand already to save $$. wink

A dolby surround music room is pretty sweet. His setup would be darned impressive I’m sure.

I have Dolby Digital EX and Dolby Digital Surround EX. Any of those the same as Dolby Surround?
Posted By: aaaaaaaaaaaaa Re: Sphincter-free M80 - 07/19/20 06:20 PM
No.

Height channels with Dolby Surround Upmixer and it doesn't break the stereo presentation like the past expander codecs.

I have tried both the EX Surround Codecs on older AVRs I had. Pretty bad.

Might be why a lot of people hold out thinking ATMOS isn't worth it. It is big time especially for applying Dolby Surround to legacy content. Hard to believe it came out in 2014 already.

He has the Anthem av60. Not sure it has the upmixer.

Food for thought as I wait for my 8 year old Onk to retire.

Yep it does

That's pretty bad if they made it all the way through all that packaging.
Posted By: Mojo Re: Sphincter-free M80 - 07/20/20 07:04 PM
Apparently the forklift driver felt there was no problem with stabbing through the packaging.

I guess they were aiming for the ports ?

Bahahahahaha!

That's one of my favorite modes the DTSX for music the Anthem also has a mode that does all channels minus the center. {Anthem music} Also really good similar to DTSX a little more stereo. Though I usually switch back to DTSX.
Sad when you hear about such parcels getting mangled and it's not like the box isn't covered in warnings . {AXIOM Audio} and all. They see FRAGILE and test if it can last a staircase or something.

Yeah, FedEx got one of my LFR1100s as well. First time in 20+ years of delivering audio equipment. Delivery services must be under stress. Ian is making a new one for me as well.

wait a second, are those all black drivers?
Posted By: Mojo Re: Sphincter-free M80 - 09/05/20 03:18 AM
Yup. They are the Bryston drivers. smile

Slimpikins has Model Ts for fronts, the sphincter-free M80 with Bryston drivers for a center and QS10HPs for sides. He's looking at M5HPs for the back.

He also has a Bryston sub, an 800 and two 500s. It's all powered by 10,000 Watts through a dedicated panel. He has Anthem M1s for his Ts.

It's a humble set-up for his gorgeous 20,000 cu. ft. living room. LOL!

I wonder if they would sell me 6x 8” Bryston drivers and if they are 8ohm.

I would love to replace the dayton RS225-8 drivers in my DIY towers. I love the tactile response from the HP drivers.
Posted By: Mojo Re: Sphincter-free M80 - 09/05/20 10:46 PM
You're probably looking at $350 each.
Posted By: aaaaaaaaaaaaa Re: Sphincter-free M80 - 09/06/20 10:13 AM
Hope not. I’m not even sure it is possible to buy them anyhow. smile

I found a couple of others that would be direct swapouts and fit within a mm. The RS225-8 bottom out if I run them full range at movie peaks. Clunk! I cross them to subs but would love to run them full range.

From my primitive characterization, it appears the Axiom HP drivers output peaks of 118dB at 3m. Those Daytons output 110dB peaks at the same distance. I'd expect the Bryston 8" drivers could outperform the Axiom HP drivers. The HP drivers are $241.
