I have been reading as much as possible on DLP vs LCD vs Plasma.....I am as confused as ever. I have about 13 feet from the wall of our room to the seating, leaving about 3 feet from the seating to the rear wall. What would anyone here reccomend as far as screen size? I am considering the new Sony 60"XBR but I also have heard that the Mitsubishi DLP and Samsung DLP are very good as well. Even noticed that they have 72" models as well.

I would appreciate any advice.

Just about a year ago I was in the same situation.

I ran across an blurb on line from some publishing organization that was quoting a couple of sources on viewing distances.

Bottom line: (as I recall, I think) THX certified theaters specs list about 10.5 ft from a 65" screen to equal the viewing angle of the rear seats in a standard movie theater.

I also was looking closely at the Sony 60" But the Wife insisted that bigger is better

...we got the 65" and now we are both smiling

1.3 to 1.5 times the screen width is a good rule of thumb for projectors, I would think it would hold true for tv's as well

This might help.

Ultimate HDTV buying guide

According to this, assuming your looking at 16 x 9 HDTVs which will have the screen approximately 11 feet from your seating area (that's allowing for a set approximately 18" to 24" deep), sets from from 42" on up will be OK.

Keep in mind that the figures in the chart are for DVD and HDTV watching. If you'll be watching a fair amount of standard TV, it might be prudent to get a set that would put your seating area in the middle of it's viewing range. If you get a larger set, you might be sitting too close for Standard TV resolution.

For example a 60" set, with a seating range, according to the chart, of 7.5' minimum to 15' maximum would have your 11' distance approximately in the middle of that range.

If your watching will be primarily DVDs and HDTV, then get the biggest you can afford!!!!!!!!

You're right. In just a few seconds I learned that my brother-in-law's 92 inch front projection setup will be far superior to my 27" CRT

HEY!
I found it helpful to decide how much bigger I wanted to go when I was replacing my 32" CRT with a DLP. 'Ya know, sometimes you can go too big for a small room!

Later today, I'm going to be making a big post with lots of questions, John. And if you don't stop picking on me, I may not even allow you the privilege of providing me with lots of help!

jbo: my Sony 60" SXRD is 13 ft from my recliner. It looks just fine!!! Matter of fact, it looks FANTASTIC!!!!

Just go to a showroom and stand the "appropriate" distance from the HDTV and see what you can see!

My 50 inch is 9 feet from my chair and 17 feet from the farthest chair. Both are good.
