According to the June issue of the Axiom Audiofile, they have hired Tom Cumberland to develop and design new electronic components for Axiom.

Alan? Amie? Care to elaborate? Will it be amps? surround proccessors? cd players? I am dying over here!

Let me be the first to offer my services to test any new equipment in my home - free of charge!!!

Perhaps the wizards at Axiom are considering coming out with a line of amplified speakers?

Could he not be working on new electronic components for inside the speakers?

Hell, it could just be the crossover.

A CD player or processor would be a terrifying project for a single design engineer, I would think.

It's not that hard to build a CD player, actually.

All you need is the following:
  1. a laser
  2. a few integrated circuits
  3. resistors
  4. capacitors
  5. solder
  6. a rat
  7. a rat wheel attached to a CD spindle
  8. an ample supply of "processed cheese food" used as an award when the rat runs at the correct speed (that stuff will last for years before it rots -- the amount you use depends on how much you are planning to use the CD player.)
  9. and of course, an electric shock mechanism to punish the rat for running too fast or too slow.

Make sure you don't use a Gambian rat. You wouldn't want your CD player to give you monkeypox.

Perhaps he's going to put little motors behind the Axiom logos so they wobble side to side with the beat of the music?

Uh, guys? Subwoofers have built in amps (frequently, at least.) So, why not a subwoofer amp? They could be revving their sub lineup. After all, everyone 'round here recommends Hsu or SVS, not Axiom. That could be a sore point for them, eh?

While that's certainly a possibility, you can buy perfectly good sub amps as well, which is exactly what SVS does. Perhaps Axiom wants to bring that in house but they wouldn't need a new engineer just to match SVS.

What if their current engineer (if they had one) left and we're all just throwing a fuss about nothing?

I'm positive that he was hired to ensure that all the binding posts will fit a 9.6mm spade.

For those of you who haven't read the article, here it is:

We're pleased to welcome Tom Cumberland, a graduate Electronics Engineer, to the Axiom team to develop and design new electronic components for Axiom.

Tom brings more than 23 years of engineering expertise and experience in strategic product development to Axiom. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Tom earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado. Some of the familiar brand names Tom has been associated with include the Harman Consumer Group (Director of Strategic Product Development), Alpine Electronics (amplifier design), and McIntosh, where Tom was Director of Worldwide Product Planning.

Tom advised a Danish company on the development of the world's first multi-room audio system and, early in his career, was part of a design team that developed a classified device for the US Military. He has been responsible for or assisted in the design and engineering of amplifiers, CD players, remote-control systems, laserdisc players, and a video projector.

Tom is member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Audio Engineering Society (AES). He currently resides in Miami, Florida, with his wife, Catherine.

"He has been responsible for or assisted in the design and engineering of ... a video projector."

THAT tells a lot.

I was looking at those logos last night and thought that they would look better, and say more by saying less, if the logo were just the "A" rather than the whole word "Axiom". Right now it's like the speakers are saying, "I know you've never heard of me, so here's my name". With just the "A" the speakers would say, "I know you love me. I'm so good, you're going to have to find out my full name". They would have Canadian accents, of course.

Yes, they could use the Acura/Starfleet logo "A." That would be cool.

I like the Acura one, too.

Would they express their Canadian heritage more by having it be "eh?" instead of "A"?

Sorry. I tried to resist.

Yeah, and then we can mount little spoilers on the top of the speakers and have the guy that airbruses the speakers airbrush Type R on the side and for the ports we can put those big fart mufflers. and make the drivers look like carbon fiber. wow. and since us americans have these imported they would qualify as imports too. now i see what theyre doing..... although i dont like it!

That is too damn funny. But you forgot about the "Powered by Axiom" decal plastered on the side.

..and don't forget a yellow racing stripe, that will instantly add at least 15% more power.

That's an _asymmetric_ racing stripe, mind you. And it needs a fire extinguisher. And a rollcage. (Never mind that if you have an exposed rollcage without a helmet, you're dead. Think about it.) Oooh, and blue lights.

Actually, blue lights would be pretty cool..... ;-)

Whoa, whoa. LITTLE spoilers? Naah, we need the BIGGEST ones we can find. If they're not 4 feet off of the top speaker and 10 feet wide, they don't work right. Plus they need to have little bitty aluminum supports that look adjustable. And it's better if they have more than 1 level.

amie is too busy writing down things for ian to incorporate into the design to be talking. Keep the ideas coming guys! lol. And yeah, the double decker spoilers work twice as good as single ones. good if were lucky they can put neon lights inside the speakers too so you see the glow coming out of the fart mufflers.

to be honest though, i like my speakers they way they are. :-D

Ooh, yeah, and plexiglas windows in the side with biohazard stickers on them. And extra bubbly plastic moldings all over. 'cause that's more aerodynamic and it'll make them quicker and more responsive. Little automated laser shows will help with the imaging.

Mmm, crack....

That reminds me... Yesterday I was at one of my clients, and they've got one of those huge HP plotters. It shakes while it moves, so they've put bobble heads all over the top of it. Kind of funny. And OT. Anyway, it's early.

Perhaps the speaker can be made big enough that you could acutally sit in it too. And while we're at it, let's put some wheels on it and drive it around. See, Axiom IS getting into the car audio business!
