I'm hooking up my Cable Box(Scientific Atlanta) to the Denon 2809 at the moment...what is the preferred cabling to use here, as there are a number of options according to the Denon Hierogliphic manual(S-video, compon. video ect)?

Also, in both the 2809/3808 manuals they show an HDMI connection marked as "HDP" but nowhere do I see in the manual what it is for. Is there not an HDMI input in the receiver to use that cable from the cable box or are we meant to use S-video/component video?

Tks in advance, Adrian....have to go out for a couple of hours, before I can respond to any suggestions. Tks.

I use the HDC for my bluray player. If your cable box doesn't have an HDMI output I would use a component connection.

Yep. HDC(?) or HDMI. I am assuming Denon means HDCP (HDCP stands for High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) but left off the P for some reason. Should work fine. If not that, then component with optical or coax for audio.

Thanks guys, my local audio shop said to use the HDMI connection labelled as "HDP" for the cable box...he said Denon hasn't updated several parts of the manual in recent years.

maybe HDP stands for High Definition Player.. that is what I always assumed it meant?

Anyway, if your cable box has an hdmi out then you can plug that into any available hdmi input on your receiver... doesn't matter what it is labeled.

I don't think it makes any difference which HDMI port you use for any HDMI input, but I could be wrong. The labels they put on them are most likely there for remote commands. I re-name all mine anyway, so I never really thought about it till this question came up.

Oh, use Component over S-vid and Coax. Component is vastly superior to those two.

HDCP is the protocol that HDMI uses to communicate, so I think they just labeled their out as to the form of its signal out. Maybe not, but seems logical to me.

HDP is one of the labels for an HDMI in. On the 3808 the 4 hdmi ins have the following labels: dvd, hdp, tv/cbl, dvr... as I said i always assumed that hdp was for High Def Player but who knows.

In the end it doesn't really matter, especially if you rename your inputs as I have done. (PS3, HD-DVD, xbox 360, ect.). However, I use the remote that came with the 3808 so I have to remember the relationship between the title and the input label. If you have a fancy remote I guess you wouldn't even have to do that.

My concern would be that only one is actually HDCP compliant, and that only that only that input could make the "handshake". The original question said the label was HDC, not HDP. IF it is HDP, not HDC, then it may not be HDCP at all.
Just guessing.

All is good, everything is hooked up now and working fine despite Denon's attempt to burn out my remaining braincell. I used the HDP-HDMI connection for the cab bx...everything went pretty good except I had to do the Audyssey set-up twice(had trouble getting it to "store" the settings first time, did it again, no probs.
