My current system is composed of a Yamaha RXV596 receiver with Axiom 1.5 mains (1988), Axiom AX 1.2 centre and Axiom QS4 rears. I would like to add a sub and am not sure what to go with. I found an AX 1.5 sub (triangular older design) which I could get for approx $300-$350 Canadian. Would this be an adequate sub for my system or would one of the newer ones (EP125 or EP175) be more appropriate. What differences are there with the newer design over the older triangular design. My room is approx. 12ft x 20ft and my seating is across the narrower (12ft) portion of the room from the system.

Also, I will eventually be going with either the M3Ti's or M22Ti's as my mains (haven't decided yet) once I have a bit more money. Thanks for any advice that would help me make my decision.

I would suggest the EP175. Though the EP125 would work great with your current system when you go to the M3s or M22s you would probably be happier with the larger EP175.

Thanks for the advice Ian.
I just have a couple more quick questions....
(1) What are the differences from the last generation of subwoofers to the EP series (e.g. power, compostion, etc.)?
(2) Why the change from the triangular design?
(3) If I could find one of the older designs what would be the equivalent model number to the EP175 and would it perform similarly.

Thanks for all your assistance.

Daryl :-)

The most similar sub from the last series to the EP175 would be the AX500. The power levels are similar and they both use a 10" aluminum cone woofer. The EP175 has the vortex porting, which was not available in the last series, and eliminates port noise. The EP175 is front firing as opposed to rear. The ASW cabinet design is not used in the new subs because the advantages to this design are midrange improvements which do not affect the subs.
