I know for some of you it's easy, it's your name.

But there are a lot of others that have an interesting ring to them and I was just wondering if you would share the "why" behind it.

Alomost everyone who guesses mine gets it wrong.

It's not from the Douglas Adams character found in the "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" series. Instead it's the name of my first car a 1950 Ford Prefect.

I bought it for $200 when I was 16 and didn't even have a license. Didn't have my parents permission either.

It was delivered on a rainy Saturday morning. Quite symbolic considering it is a British car.

I was sitting at the breakfast table enjoying a "Leave it to Beaver - Norman Rockwell" moment with my parents when the tow truck from the garage came around the corner with my new purchase attached at the back.

I had bought it on a Monday, in a fit of temporary insanity I might add, and I think that I was hoping that it was all a dream and that I had simply 'lost' my two hundred dollars.

Well reality came along and the "Leave it to Beaver' moment was quickly replaced by one that more resembled "The Simpsons"

Decades later I was forgiven ,but the memories of that first car are still with me. It was a natural to use that name when I first joined a motorsports forum and its been following me around the 'net ever since.

so what's your story?

cheers

Ford

Hey FordPrefect,

How is it going? I did have a good time while I was in and some very interesting moments. I have used CAV104 in the past, it comes from my time spent with the 104th Cavalry Division and NO we did not use horses. I was attached to Headquarters as a radio tech and videographer. The unit was Mobile Armor with an Air Cav unit attached to it.I spent time with both Headquartes and the Air Cav.

There is nothing better than securing your life line to a hard point in a chopper, standing on the struts at a 20 degree rake, then videotape the ground action...WATTA RUSH

Gotta go,

Nifty topic.
Unfortunately my user name is not as full of sentimental memories per se.
It's a takeoff from my dog's name and in an odd sense ryhmes with Polkaroo, that lovable kids character from daytime programming.
Ah more memories of the extreme youth years...

Mine is a combination of a nickname (lando) and the hull number (622) of the first U.S. Coast Guard ship I served in, the USCGC COURAGEOUS out of Panama City Beach, FL.

Pretty boring story here as well. B_man is just a takeoff on my last name, Buras. No one can ever pronounce it, so I just became B-man.

Ummmm...The first letter of my name, wife's, and 2 boys along with the direction of life's perfect destination (IMO, which is based on my 2 years in Summit County, Colorado). Goofy...yes...but very meaningful and wishful.

hmm...

Nothing special about my name for me. It's just sort of a nick that I picked up at work. And strangely enough, I have picked it up at more than one job! Can't quite explain it.

btw, my real name is Randey. (I have some friends named Randy that call me "Big E" because of it) I am the only one I have ever seen with that spelling, (thanks Mom!) but I didn't use it here, cause generally everybody gets it wrong anyway.

I am also known at work as "Mr Wizard" (but that's another story) - but it didn't seem appropriate to use here.

Randyman

It's these types of threads which make me want to re-register...just for a cool name. Unfortunately, I started my days on HomeTheaterSpot. I believe they wanted true names...so I went with the rules. Now I am plain old KurtisJ.

Maybe I will change to Photoguy (the kids I take pictures of for work call that) or (Jimmy (Olsen) as one of the assistant principals calls me now.) Of course Spidey or Peter Parker would suit me just fine!

My user name is kinda' a salute to my son...but I messed up on the reference, and just continued to use it. So here goes the explanation:
There is a Kids show called Bear in Big Blue House. But I started using Big Bear in Blue House....BBIBH, and it stuck!

BBIBH ..thanks for clearing your name up, it was a real puzzler.

polara, as a car guy I appreciate the special looks the cars from the 60's had. Yours has the headlights in the fenders and the grill doesn't it? I love the look, don't tell me there is a 413 under the hood .

At least they didn't all have the same look as todays cars.

My name is from a late 70's / early 80's music style that was a reaction to Punk and New Wave... "deconstructionalist" might the 50 cent word to use here....

Probably the most famous to emerge from this short lived movement is Sonic Youth.

Big - as in 6'5" (that's like 2 meters - if you Canadians happen to use that system).

Will - last name.

It's also how they addressed me in jail.

Nice digging up an interesting old thread, spiffnme.

As soon as I moved to the US from Japan 12 years ago, I found that it could be a challenge for many Americans to read and correctly pronounce my real first name Masashi (MAH-sah-she). So, here is a Japanese word that everybody knows and also kind of rhymes with my name... Of course, I love sushi, too!

mines pretty easy, Sid Vicious was the guitarist for the old punk band, the Sex Pistols (also of Sid & Nancy fame). I guess I'm a pretty big punk music fan, especially the old stuff like the Pistols, the Clash, the MC5.....

The movie "Volunteers" has a few classic moments. Throughout, John Candy plays an innocent oaf, who perpetually introduces himself fully as "Tom Tuttle from Tacoma, Washington". My real last name is not Tuttle, and I'm nowhere near as big as Candy, but the rest works. I like the part where he teaches the native Thai people to sing the Washington State fight song.

My name is how my last name is ALWAYS mispronounced. My last name is Tuepker, which is pronounced Tip-ker (yeah, go figure). I have been called "twopecker" my whole life. Before me, my father was. My mom said that when her and my father were dating, my grandmother used to call my dad "little jimmy twopecker".

Just a nickname I cant do anything about, so I might as well accept it!

I'm so sorry to disappoint all of you, but mine is pretty boring. I was born about seven weeks early and it was considered somewhat of a miracle that I survived. When I was eventually brought home from the hospital all the people in the small North Dakota town I lived in called me Little Brucie. When I was seven years old my family moved from that town. For many years we would return to that town annually to visit grandparents. Each year the residents would see how much I had grown since I was no longer little. But, the name became almost legendary in a very small way. So, when I was picking a username it just popped into my head.

my username is the same name that I DJ and produce music under. it originated from the greek mythological creature called Khronos (Chronus in latin) the god of time, who was supposedly the first being in existance.

"KRHONOS was the PROTOGONOS of time who emerged self-formed at the very beginning of time. He was an incorporeal being, serpentine in form with three heads - that of a man, a bull, and a lion. He and his mate, the serpentine Ananke (Inevitability), entwined the world-egg in their coils and split it apart, forming the ordered universe of earth, sea and sky."

the mythological figure "Kronos" is very similar, the god of time as it affects the course of human life. He was the father of zeus and haides, and was later expelled to rule the Elysian fields.

I found this fairly interesing, and it sounded good to me, so I picked it up as my DJ name.

Mine comes from online gaming, like battlefield 1942. I play as JimmyTango because everyone plays as JohnyBravo. Kinda dumb, huh?

I also post at other forums as Joey Zaza, from Godfather 3. It is Joey Zasa in the movie, but I prefer the sound of Zaza, better. He has the best death scene.

As far as Norvin...I had a paper route as a kid. I delivered to a guy named Norville. Also had a guy on my route named Arley Davidson, and went to college with a girl named Mandy. From birth she was called Mannie. Her last name was Fuks. NO KIDDING! My name is William (they call me Bill), and my wife's name is Scarlett. Our e-mail address is willscarlett, like the character, but getting that on these boards is pretty hard. It seems that a lot of people like to use it as their identity.

Haole-b as i pronounce it..

Haole comes from the hawaiian word, Haole which means without breath. Haole is what they called the white man when they first came to hawaii because they were white they looked like they were.. without breath.

Today locals still refer to tourists, white people all together as Haole. Over here its not really a big deal. When someone referes to you as that its not like an insult. Say, two waitresses could be talking one is taking over the table for another, she would say.. oh, i got the table with the haole lady.

the B stands for boy, and brandon because growing up kids that didnt know my name or something would say Hey! haole boy! lol.

I came up with it a few years ago when i first got online and have used it everywhere ever since. its like my second name. Even for my senior photo whith the whole class where we hold up signs... well mine read "typical haole" since thats something everyone likes to say to haoles. I take it with a grain of salt. born and raised here for 18 years i could pass as a true blood hawaiian anyday.. only if i looked the part.

i needed to come up with a cool name for the online game 'monarchy' which later became canon

and i saw someone using the name killson. or something son. So i made Hawkson
anyways this was about 4 years ago and as of yet, i believe i am the only Hawkson, Hawkson1 or Hawkson101 on any forum, or any email address(yahoo, aol, msn etc, IM). So if you see a Hawkson out there its me.

Wanna help our network guys to setup our VoIP. I think they are kinda approaching it the wrong way.
100meg backbone is running like its less than 10 megabit. Since we started BIX-ing it runs like molasses.
Just for fun I tried casting a 256k media streaming service using Media Services on 2000 and alarms were going off on our network monitoring systems when people were trying to hit it and play the video. That was fun. I kinda forgot to notify the Network Mgr. hehehe...

Yeah, sounds like you guys need some netowrking experts.

What category rating are the BIX products you're using? They go up to Cat6, which shouldn't cause any problems.

Also, if your VoIP network is going to be used heavily, I'd suggest going gigabit.

I agree with you 100%. Not sure of the Cat level. I have a feeling it is how the switches and hubs are set and how the cluster servers are configured. I think there are also many collisions. I am not a network expert but there are defitely issues. My outlook mail is also timing out on the mail servers most of the day.
Those Gigabit switches are not cheap...plus moving all the current PC's to a gigabit network card. Helpdesk would not be happy.

collisions shouldn't be occurring if everything is running full duplex -- is it? It's best to set each device to full duplex rather than leaving them on auto-detect.

Sorry for the thread-jacking. I just can't sit idly by while someone's network is suffering.

x94blair3 = x94blair3@wmich.edu = email address assigned my freshman year of college at Western Michigan University = great times!

94 was the year I started and apparently I was the 3rd Blair starting that year although I never met the first two.

Everytime I need a reality check on how much the world has changed in 10 years, I remember that when that account was assigned, I used email sparingly...on a terminal that had a keyboard and a black and white monitor.

I'm sure everyone feels this way about their life, but I'm amazed to have been alive during such technological growth.

As an interesting counterpoint, I started in '95 (at UC Berkeley), and we were the first on a new email system where we didn't have to use Pine and terminals. We could use POP/SMTP clients. Oooh... By the end of my time there (5 years), they'd (mostly) phased out the old system. Pretty incredible, how fast things have moved.

Not to jack the thread, but I agree. Within the 4 years I was at Western, we went from pine to pop/smtp to my first bought home computer to dialup through school and the quickly growing WWW.

Berkeley in '95? Not to get way off topic, but Adam Duritz haunts that place right? Ever see Counting Crows when they were still local?

Or I could be the only one around here who loves counting crows...

Nope. I actually never knew that. Of course, I wasn't too aware of the professional music scene when I was in college; just listened to my CDs, mainly.

I remeber that too. Anyone go further back with Archie and Gopher.
Back then I comunicated via IRC when that earthquake hit the bridge in San Fran.
Years before that using dial-up modems hitting BBS using HSLINK to transfer files and chatting at the same time. The only way to go outside your area code was hacking corporate PBX and jumping and jumping PBX to get long distance...back in the good ole days of 9600 and 14.4 baud modems.

Those were the days. Hence I work in the Telecom industry now. We hire lots of co-op Waterloo guys. Smart kids.

Ahhh.. the days when you had to use more than one program to get information.

I had the privilege of going to a high school that had a leased line running at 56kpbs (through a local company) to the internet. I remember using Archie and Gopher, but I'll never forget the day the computer teacher got Mosaic running was cool, too. We had a few DECs in the lab, but the rest were Macs.

Of course, previous to that, I had been active on a number of local BBSes.

What was the biggest BBS in Cali back then...before the FBI sting on all the illegal file boards. Up here it was Untouchables in Toronto and Park Central in NYC. I think the Tubs is still running even today. I used to hit a site in Cali and I just forget what name it was. It was pretty huge. 12 dial lines @ 14.4k back then and up to 24 lines at 56k before they went all down.

I think this thread deserves a once-a-month revival...

I also noticed you guys were talking about PINE based email, I thought you'd be interested to know that we still use it. Our grain company's archaic computer system uses pine email. We've slowly changed over in the last 2-3 years and use GroupWise email now for almost everything (can use PINE for some communication but why would you want to???).

I've really enjoyed this thread. Thanks for reviving it, Sid. I've wondered about many of the regulars' names. Now I know. Mine's easy. As you can tell from my signature, my first name is Jack. Actually, it's a nickname for my legal name, John. But, I've been called Jack since birth. So, therefore I am "A Jack." Just changed the "ck" to an "x" for fun, and because it made it a common word. I have nothing to do with cleanliness (no wisecracks, now);)

My user name is a pun of sorts...and a jibe at my sister's Texas accent.

My last name is Furrer (pronounced "fur" to make it easy...too many Fuhrer references over the years from those trying to pronounce it correctly).

Derived from the question upon viewing one of my brothers doing something they shouldn't..."Wonder what Furrer that is?"...

Or the Texas slang answer to a rather dumb question: What fur?

Mine follows a simple formula:

City of residence + Last name + species.

AustinBirdMan.

PS - Now we need a thread where we try to identify the source of the quotations used as taglines. Anyone know where mine comes from? Should be easy for fans of epic movies.

Yes, Omar Sharif.

I wanted to use my favorite quotation from Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find," from the Misfit about the old lady, but some might misinterpret it as misogynist: "She'd a been a good woman," said the Misfit, "if there'd a been someone there to shoot here every day of her life."

Being the new kid on the block (so to speak) , i should introduce myself. My user name is simple. D comes from my nickname Limie D. Where they got that from i don't have a clue, as my name is Doug Linebaugh.. But is stuck. The "man" is just my gender, as simple as that.

Mine's real boring...my first and middle initials and last name. My name is pretty uncommon, and if my screen name is ever already taken, it usually means I have visited that site before and forgotten.

My tagline quote was already guessed in another thread, but those who didn't see it are welcome to try.

I thought it would be cool to revive this thread to hear about why you're called what you are. As for me there was a fast food hot dog joint back in the late eighties (high school days) named Ritchies good dogs. Never ate there of course (hole in the wall) but my friends used to razz me quite a bit because my last name is Richey. Hence the name Richeydog.
I almost went with Pillz as my username, short for pillsbury doughboy, but that's another story...

Anyone else care to jump in here and share your story? Exciting or not let's hear it.

Iron Maiden is my long time favorite band and "Hallowed be thy name" one of my favorite tracks ever, from their 1982 album. So comes thyname, a unique username for myself, I often use in message boards, ebay, etc...

Funny to browse this thread though, I read so many username I don's see now since I joined Axiom board.

Had a friend that I grew up with that I refered to as Slick. Only I would say it SSSSSSSSSSlick. (just some weird thing we did). He in turn would refer to me by my last name since it started with an 'S' and he could do the same intonation. . . .SSSSSSSSSutherland. But in order to be able to remember how many S's I went with three.

Oh how exciting huh!

My first name is Jake which always prompts people to call me Jake "The Snake". When i would play online games Counter Strike, Quake etc I changed it to snakeyes becuase it sounds more menacing. and now i use that for just about everything.

My user name comes from the title of a song by my favorite band, Tool.

Here's an explanation taken from The Tool Page:
In ancient Egyptian, it breaks down to Mer (rotating fields of light), Ka (spirit), and Ba (soul / body). Merkaba meditations facilitate deep spiritual growth and activation. Given the head space listeners tend to enter when listening to the song, and that live performances of this song feature Maynard (vocals) introspective onstage, it makes sense that the song is named for this style of meditation.

The word also translates to 'chariot' in Hebrew ("merkavah").

KMFDM - INANE

Basically this became my 'internet handle' over 10 years ago when I started playing games online. KMFDM is my fav band and at the time INANE was one of my favorite songs so a buddy of mine started refering to me as 'INANE' and it stuck.

Although never a Star Trek fan (in fact, I have never seen a single Star Trek movie, and have only seen a few of the older "Captain Kirk" episodes on TV), in a moment of brief (and now regrettable) creative insanity, I chose "Capn_Pickard" as my handle. My last name is Pickard (Captain Piccard on Star TRek either uses no "k" or replaces it with a "c" I believe). People often call me Captain Pickard for no apparent reason other than to P*ss me off, or grate on my nerves. And there's the always common - Pickard, like the star trek guy - whenever someone gets my license or credit card at the check out.

Terrible name, I know. I wish I had something cooler, like "Max Powers - the name you'd love to touch."

In fact, I think I'm gonna see about changing handle to that - or starting a new account with that as my new handle. Enough of this Cap'n nonsense....

I wanted to name one of our twins Kai, but in tribute to Great-Grandfathers on both sides of our family-Jens won out. I still love the name, but am feeling too old at 47 (especially with twin 14 month old hooligans) to try again.

Mine is a play on my profession as a psychiatrist and reflects my love for vanity license plates, hence the use of the "8". It also reflects accurately on the mental health care system these days, where market forces (i.e. managed care and its ilk) have essentially pushed us physicians into roles as medication managers, instead of comprehensive care providers, analysts, etc. Now I "turf" out all the therapy to others ...

Now, who else needs to chime in here?

- sirquack
- nickbuol (kinda obvious)
- sonicfox (also kinda obvious )
- HomeDad

and many more ...

I do a lot of silviculture site preparation with an excavator. The special attachment that I use on the excavator is called a screefer, its like a narrow brush rake that you push the debris clear after logging so that trees can be planted. The spots (one for every tree they plant)I make with it are called screefs, hence Screefer.

My user name derives from being Scottish. I got married in my clans' kilt and at my wedding reception we all drank a wee bit too much and was asked by the maid of honour "What was up our kilts?" My groomsmen and I all looked at each other and decided to show the guests what we were packing under our kilts. It is now something everyone remembers about me now..... Don't recall anyone calling me BigJohn or Big Will afterwords though.

Good story, kilty; sounds like your wedding was about like the one sung about in "My Mother's Wedding Day" from Brigadoon, if you're familiar with that fine musical based in Scottish lore.

LightninJoe comes from J.Lawton "Lightnin' Joe" Collins, CO of VII Corps during the breakout of 3rd Army from the Normandy beach head during Autumn of 1944 (later Army Chief of Staff under the brilliant Omar Bradley, then Chairman JCOS). I was in Eagle Troop, Second of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Blackhorse Armored Cav) during the last stages of the Cold War and beyond. We were part of VII Corps, 3rd Army, which didn't stand down from VE day until around 1992. We covered the Fulda Gap along with 10Cav, the 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd and 3rd Armored, 2nd and 4th Infantry, and a bunch of others including Brits, Canadians, and Bundeswehr. There were about 250,000 of us including German national guard against the entire Russian 2nd Shock Army of about 1 million. And we would have kicked serious ass if they bothered to swarm the Plains of Hesse. 11Cav is now OPFor at the NTC in California.

Mine?..........Well, my initials are LT.

"LT" was also used as the logo, and name of the retail store I once owned.

"61".......I raced a #6 stock car in 1975, at the local paved oval, (street stock division).
They already had a #6 car, so I HAD to change my car number, I picked...........#61.

In 1995, I resurected the #61 on my 1:10th scale electric R/C race (pan) car in Florida.

Finally,
Axiom boards..02/04.............LT61.

Yeah Jack, my secondary area of listening enthusiasm is broadway and Hollywood musicals. This discussion has prompted me to punch up my favorite of the three Brigadoons that I own, terrific singing with Jack Cassidy and Shirley Jones , significantly better than in the film, I think. Great stuff in "Waitin' For My Dearie", "Heather on the Hill", "My Mother's Wedding Day" etc.

Kilty, listening to Brigadoon, I just realized that if you're only familiar with the(grossly inferior)film version of the music that you don't know what my reference to "My Mother's Wedding Day" meant, since it was cut from the film. Listen to a real recording to hear about the drunken brawl at the wedding.

You are correct about that, can you point me in the direction were I can get a copy. I am glad that my main story was reffered to Brigadoon than "So I married an Axe Murderer." My buddies were convinced that Mike Myers Father in that movie was taken after my father!

Does anyone else remember the Canadian Game Show 'Bumper Stumpers'? Two people would compete and they would get a clue from the host: "Which license plate, the right or the left, belongs to an irate baker?" And then you would have to work out what they both said, and then guess which one belonged to the clue. Classic.

Hey Amie.. I do remember a game show like that here in the states, though I don't remember the name of the show.

I've used my handle since my early online gaming days. I first used it playing one of the first online 3D multiplayer games: Airwar on the Genie network, on my Amiga 500, and my 1200 baud modem. It was a simple WWII dogfighting game. The scoring system was pretty basic back then, based on more points for the most kills without being shot down. There were quite a few hot-doggers online boasting about their scores, which of course put me on a mission. I've basically just stuck with the handle ever since!

Kilty, the Cassidy/Jones CD I linked above is available from Amazon sellers(the link)and also Tower Records(10% off sale ends today). You can get a brief taste of the music from their sample clips. My second favorite Brigadoon, and a bit better-recorded than the older Cassidy/Jones, is this one , with an especially good "Waitin' For My Dearie".

Jack, you inspired me to pick up the movie from the library on the way home and watch it for the first time in about three years. Yeah, Gene and Cyd do some nice dancing through the heather on the hill, and it's definitely better than the dancing on any of the CDs. It's still a shame that they cut funny stuff like "The Love of My Life" and "My Mother's Wedding Day" and turned beautiful romantic duets like "The Heather on the Hill" and "Almost Like Being in Love" into a Gene Kelly monologue to accompany his dancing.

Agreed.

Brigadoon didn't really do well at the box office when first released. Kelly always blamed it on the fact that the movie had to be shot on a sound stage at the studio, and looked it. MGM, which was struggling financially at the time, refused to allow the movie to be shot on location in Scotland as Kelly demanded. To compensate, they took some money allocated to another musical being shot at the same time, and did Brigadoon's sound stage as elaborately as they could. Ironically the other movie, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers did much better at the box office.

Thanks guys, I think I will setup a movie date night with the wifey this weekend. Maybe wear my kilt for effect...or easy access.

Contrary to popular belief, no más (no more) is a happy coincidence and not the reason for my screen name. My mother and sister, way back when I was young, thought it would be fun to teach my youngest brother to call me Thomas since I hated it so (I've since gotten over it). He couldn't say Thomas, so he said Nomas - a name that many family and some friends still call me. The Mr came from a phase where he called everyone Mr. or Mrs. [insert their name here].

As Bren R. - wow, I really don't have to explain mine, do I?!?

No one calls me Brenden... except my one living grandmother and telemarketers. I can tell them apart since the telemarketers don't "haff a t'ick G'arh'man acc'int"

I'm Dan...I do magic...and I like the number 7.

I've had this username since I was 9 years old. No reason to stop now.

I suppose after all these years, I shall explain my user name. I'd like to make it clear that I did NOT choose it because I thought it was fitting! The boring reality is that I took it from a song titled, "The Sonic Fox", which happens to be on one of my favorite electronic albums, Tango N' Vectif by Mu-ziq. I just thought it was a cool name, that's all!

Mary, nevertheless it's still appropriate. Your membership on an audio board justifies the first half and your picture the second.

Going by this, my oldest son should have a username of Nodie, which is how he pronounced his name when he was 2.

I am still trying to figure out how he managed to get that from Warren.

when I was 9, usernames were called handles.

I don't think it's just an age thing, I think it also depended upon your "twenty".

10-4 Good Buddy!

May be dating myself, but at the time my handle was "Starchild" (named after a character in the Parliament song - Mothership Connection (Starchild)).

"There's a Smokey on your bumper, good buddy"...

Music tastes have changed since then...fortunately.

But the use of "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)" in Christmas commercials for Jack In The Box and some movies of late does bring a smile of remembrance to my face.

HA! HA! I remember back in the 70's when CB radios were popular in people's cars...at least with OUR family. It was like a cell phone in those days! I remember my dad even had one in his boat and my friends & I used to get on it all the time and talk to truckers. Looking back on it, I don't think it was a good idea considering all the sickos out there!

Well Murph is pretty self explanatory.

However my hotmail is pei_ollllo

Anyone care to take a guess at what that means? I have given it away in previous posts but checking those would be cheating, right????
