Go with a lesser receiver and add an external used amp.
I bought an Anthem MCA 20 (stereo amp) and MCA 30 (3 channel amp) for about $250 and $400.
With a $400 receiver to act as a pre-amp, you are easily covered for power and features for under $800.
Less if you get a used receiver.

Audiogon and Canuck Audio Mart are good places to start for used gear.
