I have been an obsessive music fan and musician my whole life, and yet until recently I never felt like I needed to move up to audiophile status. Something snapped inside me when I realized I was finally starting to experience some very mild hearing loss. Knowing I might not have my great ears forever, I decided it was time to experience the best of the best while I still can. I listen to and enjoy all genres of music, having owned or consumed many thousands of records, cassette tapes, CDs, mp3s, streaming services, and records again. But I have a really special place reserved in my heart for metal. Traditional, thrash, extreme, black, death, and so on. I just love it. It isn’t the only thing I listen to by any stretch of the imagination, but it is the genre I find the most pure joy in listening to. I wanted speakers that would crunch, scream, squeal, thump, and just plain rock. Speakers that would capture haunting acoustic passages, driving double kick drums, and twin Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifiers. Turns out Axiom had me covered. I strongly debated the LFR1100s, but ultimately decided that, given a room size of about 2000 cubic meters, there was such a thing as visual and auditory overkill. I was already dropping a bundle on high-end preamp and turntable purchases, as well as dual subs (more on this in a sec). Better to grab omnis that would do the job and not dominate the look of the room. To finally cut to the chase: these speakers sound incredible. I went high-powered, paired with the 1000 watt DSP combo for convenience and reduction in number of components. I truly can’t imagine needing more watts or bigger speakers, because when cranked these babies sing. They are marvelously clean, exposing the glory of my music across an enormous dynamic range and sound stage. And yes, the metal is epic heavy yumminess. Placement is CRITICAL. This has been covered by Axiom and other reviewers alike, but it bears a repeat. When I first set them up I was mildly underwhelmed, to the point of feeling like my system was missing something. Over subsequent days I experimented with proper separation and space until...WOW. Listening to music has become a head-shaking, jaw-dropping, insane-giggle-inspiring event. Seriously, I laugh out loud at how ridiculously awesome my records sound. I mentioned the addition of dual subs. Truth told, I could have gone without. I ordered them that first day feeling like something was missing, before I had really gotten the room placement dialed. Go big or go home though, right? Once the audiophile bug bites it’s hard to ignore the subsequent itch. Sorry not sorry neighbors. Axiom has made something truly special here. If you are a music fan, you will not go wrong. If you love jazz or rock or classical or electronic or technical death metal (I have cranked them all), you will not go wrong. If you are wondering if a 660 will meet your needs in a master bedroom sized space, you will absolutely not go wrong.

Much has been said about the speakers’ ability to create an accurate soundstage, and to give the impression of the speaker’s neutrality and ‘just plain disappearing’. What most amazes me is the fact the the tonal balance doesn’t change significantly when you turn the sound to a very low level. Even the bass is still present! When I turn it up there doesn’t seem to be a spot -that most speakers have- where the sound suddenly comes alive. It just fills the room more! The sound never gets aggressive or edgy or boomy. In the evening I just love the realism of the sound at low volume levels. I have the integrated pre-amp/amp/dsp that came with the unit, and I rarely turn the volume control up past the 10 o’clock position, as I live in a wood and plaster apartment building and the sound-proofing is not good. The speakers seem to be ideally suited to a large room like mine. I suspect they would be awesome in a bigger listening room. By the way, I am a regular symphony concert goer and choral singer, and have ears that are very sensitive to any sort of harmonic distortion, something present in a surprising number of concert venues. I listen mainly to vocal, jazz and classical.

The LFR660s are terrific, a thousand good things will be said about them. Triangles, combs, and such have showed up like magic in my songs. In one of them, I heard a chair creaking when the musician was getting out of it at the end of the recording session. How cool is that? And the vocals, they are as life-like as one can get. These speakers with the ADA1000 amp are the real deal. You all may be interested in why I purchased the 660s when I was already enjoying my M60s. Serious consideration evolved as I thought of my previous Axiom upgrades, each one made my music sound better. Looking at the price of the 660s, I figured Axiom would not price and sell them like this unless they were a major improvement and was I ever right. Hey Ian and Andrew, you two have created some very special LFR speakers, the 660s are magical. Talk about spaciousness and airiness, I can't get over the sound. Every time I turn on my music, I shake my head in disbelief that they sound so good. Sorry to say that the 660s with the dsp amp combo will be my last major purchase from Axiom. Oh, guess I forgot, I just traded in my m60s in for an ADA1000-5. Oh well!

WOW! I have never been this taken aback by a pair of speakers. Every song I play is like hearing it for the first time!
