I agree, the two mains can simulate the center channel, so I would start with either two m22's or m3's and a sub, or two m50's or m60's with no sub. Later as your budget permits you could add the sub or surrounds. As John mentioned you save 10% from the Factory Outlet on the Store page, and another 5% if you buy 5 items or more.
For receivers, there are lots of good options. Heck I noticed on Walmart.com the other day they are offering some great deals, including 2 Pioneer models, $258 and $499(THX cert.)
