Oops, my mistake. The distance settings represent the delay, since sound travels at roughly 1 foot per millisecond. My response dates me, back to the time when AV receivers had delay adjustments calibrated not in feet but in milliseconds. It was smart to change the AV menus to distances that automatically set the correct amount of digital delay for the individual speakers in a 5.1 or 7.1-channel setup.
