I have the VP100 in a much larger room and I think it is just fine.

Honestly, I've never felt like it is a compromise. There is a perfect spot for it below my RPTV.

I say spend the money on something else. Like your wife. That little investment will come in mighty handy when you want to do an even more expensive upgrade down the line.
