I heard someone say many years ago long before the financial meltdown, that in order to be a somewhat "successful" CEO of any corporation of an consequence, one must be a type of sociopath or psychopath, in other words, one with little or no conscience to be able to handle the difficult times when perhaps hundreds or even thousands of people might have to lose their jobs as a result of downsizing in order to maintain the viability of that corporation AND in the case of a public company, satisfy the shareholders.

I doubt that there are many of us that could live(and sleep at night) with the idea that our decision had perhaps just destroyed the lives of many people, of course, most of whom we will never see or meet.
