We had a "discussion" in which the acoustic properties of natural wood were discussed a little while back. I'm not going to suggest you read it because it wasn't the most productive thing ever but I think the general feeling is that solid wood is not a good choice unless a particular piece is specifically sought out and chosen for it's unique character. Any given piece of natural wood will have different acoustic characteristics, even another piece even from the same tree. This is why "real wood" speakers are more often a wood veneer over MDF.

As for building custom cabinets to house the M3 components, I really don't know if the only difference between the M3 and M40 is the encosure. Someone here is likely to know though.
