The best thing to do is to look at which one has the games you really want to play. The xbox has slightly better graphics, but not enough better (imho) to choose it over the PS2. The Xbox comes with a NIC, but you cannot play online with it without getting the M$ service ($50.00 a year I think). However, from what I have heard/read the online gaming experience with the XBOX is (for the most part) more stable and less fraught with cheating.

You could also do what I did. Get both! Sound on both is the same. Some games have surround. Most do not.
