The finish of the QS8s is vinyl over MDF (hardwood is not necessarily the best choice for construction of speakers), but it is extremeley well done. From all that I've heard (I've got QS4s coming soon) the QS series is extremeley forgiving of placement, but the recommended position is on the walls.

I've never heard the Mirages (or the QS8s for that matter!)
