Stuart, I had EXACTLY the same experience. I had the sub tucked pretty well into the front left corner, and just wasn't getting that much out of it. I did the same thing you did. Keeping it the same distance from the side wall, I just slid it farther away from the front wall, and got a noticeable improvement.
