The problem seems to be that some recordings have the bass pumped up to sound good without a sub... and then when you do add a good sub the results are quite scary.

The other problem is that your room probably has a response peak in the 30-40 Hz range (any dimension from 13-19 feet will do that) which is making matters much worse.

What are your room dimensions, roughly ?
