Jazznut,
I auditioned the M22s along with the M60s before the M22s were eventually sent back. I had considered the M22s as surrounds as well before settling on the QS8s.

The basic difference i found between the M60s and M22s was simple. The M60s had more bass extension and a larger sound typical of a floorstanding speaker as compared to the smaller bookshelf sized M22.
I found the the M22 was otherwise near identical in its sonic signature to the M60. Their high end and midrange frequencies were no different to my ears. The M60 produced a larger overall sound which is not unexpected from a tower. The best description i could use to put it into words is this, "The M60 is simply the larger of identical twins or in the very least, the bigger brother".
My original post is here but i was also looking at another set of speakers at the time.
My second post on the M22s vs QS8s is here although it may not give you as much info on the M22s vs M60s as you are looking for.
There are several other posts on the forums about personal reviews of M60s vs. other axiom models. Try doing some further searching.
