Well, it's time to get the woodcarvers busy on our free give-aways for the Axiom picnic . . . so we should get an idea of numbers. Who decided they were in for the Axiom tour / golf day / sneak preview / free stuff / play with very loud toys day at Axiom on September 10th?

Since I am such a lovable member of the forum, can I be let in on the sneak previews even though I cannot attend?

Not a good weekend for me either, but the free stuff and sneak previews do sound good. A chance to hear the M50 to see if I prefer them to the M22 would be nice as well.
Maybe next year.

I am in, I will be driving from Ottawa Although I am not as known as the other users. Of course I have yet to take delivery of my Axioms, maybe I should wait(sounds something new over the horizon)?? I have been waiting for 8 months or so for my axioms Layaway plan while I build the extension because I have ZERO room

Amie:
I'm really hoping to attend, but I won't be able to commit until we're closer. I know that doesn't help you much!
In the two week period prior, I'm going to be in Acadia Nat'l Park for a four-day mini vacation and attending a three day Photoshop convention. Those will probably put me way behind on things here and I know it's going to be tight to lose another few days besides!
On the other side of the coin, it really does sound like fun!
Edit- And, just to clarify, is all of this happening on the tenth only or is it a weekend thing?

This all sounds too good to miss.
I spoke with Noreen(?) awhile back and she mentioned some camp ground next door but I forgot the name. Could you please let us know of some places within stubling distance from the festivite so I can reserve/book?
Any Burlington area people want to meet up first and possibly car pool? I'm supposed to be getting my first minivan next week...30 and a minivan...my gawd where did I go wrong?
Thanks!

The camping 'resort' next door is Algonquin Trails. The closest hotel is Lumina Resort (ah, sweet love, where Ian and I and countless other couples met . . .) and if a spa is more your thing (read: the only way you're going to get the wife and kids up here with you!) then I'd recommend Deerhurst Resort, the place where Shania Twain was discovered.

My thought was the official day would be the 10th - meet the folks of Axiom, plant tour, potato salad, frisbeer etc. Then for anyone who was interested, golfing on Sunday. But any opinions are welcome!

Hey Amie:
Got any suggestions for a hotel that won't cost a pair of M60s per night? Holiday Inn Express or one of those "We'll leave the light on" deals?
It's not the price....errr... I'm just not looking to meet anyone!

Mark, you can get a cabin at the resort next to the plant for $59.00 CAD / night. That's like $6.00 US!!!!!!

OK, I'll admit that I only looked at the Lumina (based upon the word "hotel". The spa has good rates as well (and golf)! The ~$700/night rates were a bit much for me!

That's $700 a WEEK including meals, not 700 a night.
"Weekly rate per adult (including 2 meals daily) based on number of adults in accommodation.
DAILY RATES: $98 to $130 M.A.P."
"If you are confused by the rates CALL, it's usually LESS than you think."

I probably drink more c-c-c-c-c-coffee than you
Exchange rate looks like $1.22 CDN per $US off a forex site. Banks and credit card companies will probably shave a few points off that, so maybe divide by 1.18 to get equivalent US ?
Our credit card companies went through a phase of grossly overcharging on exchange rates, but after some beatings they went back to only grossly overcharging on interest rates. Wouldn't hurt to check with your cc provider.
For accomodations before and after, unless my new house goes totally off the rails I can offer a place to stay near Toronto (and probably transportation) plus almost as wide a selection of Axiom products as they have up in Dwight. Might not be set up with guest beds etc.. but there will be A/C, running water and a couple of thoroughly sleep-tested sofas.

I'll make the drive up from Oshawa (2 1/2 hours) for a factory tour and chat with fellow Axiomites.
Definately interested on golfing on the Sunday also.

Amie,
i'm still hoping to be there, but I won't know for sure until closer to the actual date. It would be in the middle of harvest for me which is busy time. Also flights are around $600 return from 'Toon town so I'm keeping my eyes open for a flight sale.
It looks like a beautiful golf course, I'd like the opportunity to go for a round with some of my Axiom friends(certainly hoped for a round with Ray - our resident pro!!!)

Thanks Amie, I proposed to my wife at the Deerhurst Resort after the day spa and a wonderful meal (winter 2000). A beautiful place, played golf there summer 2003 and I would love to play it again...

Ran it by the future X-wife today, and it went pretty well. The biggest issue is that the new house closes on the 15th. I'll be able to tell as we get closer. May end up only being a day trip, though.

(Just kidding on the future X-wife thing. She laughs at it everytime. Is that a good thing?)

I may consider a trip to Ottawa for the day....or two.

This may have been said already, but I think it is a pretty amazing testament to Axiom as a company that their customers want to all get together for a picnic at company headquarters. I know people that don't want to go to their OWN company picnic's let alone one at another company. Just another sign of what a good company Axiom is and how much we all love their products. I can't think of another company that I have bought something from that would even be able to suggest such a thing and expect to have people come. Keep up the good work Axiom!

I think Wichita, Kansas is pretty much in the middle of the country. Unless of course you include Hawaii and Alaska, which would put the center somewhere around Washington or Oregon.

wish i could be there. Except if i went golfing whoever rides with me in the cart would have to risk walking half the course.... because i somehow always end up getting a flat tire *evil smirk* But the good news is that i have only had to abandon the cart once.
Sounds like ya'll are gonna have a blast. And hey theres plenty of great things to do here when we have that winter thing.. nobody likes florida anyway

If you include Puerto Rico that would shift the center a bit closer to Florida. Try not to think about Alaska... and DEFINITELY don't think about Guam...

Funny;...I often think about Alaska, but almost never about Guam.....
Think it's cause Alaska has such nice scenery.....but that's a different story altogether.
Of course; since NY is capitol of the US now instead of DC,perhaps if DC had a star, they could give it to someone else!
-sigh- Guess Dwight may be closest after all.

'k, we have a rough idea of who is coming and the distance they are travelling - so is 11 am too early to start the festivities? Joe, Brent, Alan and Jean will be on hand to answer all your audio questions. If there are any vegetarians, we definitely need to know that in advance . . .

It would be fun to see the Axiom staff and meet some of the people from the boards. I will be attending the festivities only in the virtual realm.

Maybe we could set up a webcam ?
11:00 sounds like a good start time. Will there be a map posted ? Mapquest and Yahoo seem to be able to find Dorset (a fire tower and a gas station) but have never heard of Dwight

Google Maps
simply take 400 to 11, turn right onto 60 and in about 20 minutes or so you're there.
...hey, is that Axiom's private airport?

How many people are spending the night locally? I know several of you are driving up and back - or across and back - or down and back - but is anyone staying in scenic Dwight? Just trying to finish the organization.
Side note - this is a lot of fun for us. We're having a good time planning this!

I'm not going to be able to make it either. My mom in RI has been having some health issues and with time spent there, I'm just falling far enough behind on enough work so that I don't even want to answer the phone. I have to get caught up.
It really sounded like fun! I was going to bring my camera equipment and take a bunch of photos that I could put up on a website.

Probably just driving up for the day unless I can find somewhere for the dogs to stay. All of my normal "dog sitters" seem to be away this weekend themselves...
BTW I'm still not sure where the Axiom HO actually is. I know it's on Hwy 60 in the general vicinity of Dwight, and I'm pretty sure Dwight is at Hwys 35 and 60 (which I can find), but past that all I can do is drive around or ask at the canoe place (second map). I looked at the satellite photos for a subwoofer up on a pole but I think the imagery predates the EP500/600 development

It's on the lefthand side as you are going east, just past "downtown Dwight as I remember. I also am going to make it a day trip.

Thanks !!
Is it safe to assume that the factory is east of Hwy 35 ? Your route comes across from hwy 11 which covers both sides of Dwight; I would probably come up 35 to avoid having to drive across TO and come back.

I'm sorry - didn't mean to be coy with directions!!!
From 'the south', take Highway 400 to Barrie, then Highway 11 to Huntsville. Take the third interchange at Huntsville, which is Highway 60. It only goes one way. Dwight is 22 km east of Huntsville. You will drive through the village, and then you'll see Highway 35 and a Petro-Can on the right, and we're 1 km past that on the left. The Cookhouse Restaurant, the Campground, and Axiom are all clustered together there.
Highway 35 is such a beautiful route. If you don't mind getting stuck behind canoes, trailers, etc, you'll have a great drive. It's such a haven for bikers as well, so keep an eye out! You'll see some gorgeous machines cruising by. Just take 35 until it ends and then make a right; we're 1 km from there.

For all of those going, are you going alone or are you bringing the S.O. / Family? Just curious.

Amie, do you have a formal itinerary as to how the day will play out, or are you playing it by ear? I know you said you will be starting at around 11:00am, but you haven't said much else.
Tour first, going deaf, then lunch? Games first (Frisbeer/Washer toss), then tour/going deaf, then lunch? Are we each bringing our own picnic basket, or contributing a salad/entre of some sort? Will you have a BBQ fired up? How late so you expect things to go?
Shawn
Oh, as a side bar for those interested, across the street (ok, it's down the road a little bit), is Langford Canoe and Langford Canoe Gift Store

What we're thinking is 11 am for the factory tour; 12 for a barbecue (we've got the food covered, thank you! Pmbuko's sending the potato salad). Then Ian has a few things to say and a few things to play, and we figured we would play it by ear - imagining 4 pm. Is that what everyone else had in mind?

Sounds real good. If the barbeque is lunchtime then I can leave the dogs at home. They already leave the room when the stereo is loud, and my system is NOTHING like what Ian probably has in his office

Hi Amie
I will be attending on Saturday. I will be bringing a friend that is picking up some equipment. We both had the tour about a month ago so we will be just up for the food at noon and other attractions. I am comming from the Alliston area and my friend is comming from London.
Looking forward to it, hope the weather holds out.
See you there.
Thanks

Sounds great! I'm putting the finishing touches on the 'other' right now and it's very fun! A lot of the staff will be there as well, which is great. Tom Cumberland wanted to do a reading from his latest Audio Engineering Society Paper but we don't seem to be able to find a room that will fit enough beds for when we nod off . . . so we'll save that for next time.

Only problem I can see is when I move my listening chair(the comfortable one)to in front of the computer so I can spend the entire day Right Here, may cause a bit of concern with the rest of the family.
But Hey! Don't want to miss nothin'

Well, I'm afraid I won't be making it after all. I stopped by the new house tonight, only to find water pouring out of the ceiling in the mud room. Seems that the ensuite tub upstairs has a leak. I have to meet with the builder tomorrow to get things hammered out before we take possession on Thursday.
I can't express how disappointed I am. (on a number of levels....) I was really looking forward to meeting you all.
Everyone have a great time!! I'll check in a few times tomorrow.

Just a guess; but it looks like a real nifty hodge-podge of old speaker lines, newer prototypes and even some current/near current production models!

Here's a quick trip report; unfortunately I arrived up there having had WAY too little sleep for the last couple of days so some of the details were already fuzzy by the time I got home. Bottom line was that I had the pleasure of meeting a bunch of the nicest, most interesting people you could imagine...
Random notes from the picnic :
It was just over 3-1/2 hour drive from Toronto. Arrived a bit after 11 -- Amie and others were just carrying goodies out to the picnic area when I arrived.
After asking a few (in hindsight) dumb questions I figured out that this was a company picnic with board denizens invited, so most of the nice people there were Axiom staff. D'oh !!
Me : "So, like, where did you come in from ?"
Them : (with a confused expression) "about 1/2 mile that way"
There were perhaps 1/2 dozen customers and dealers; the rest were Axom staff and friends, including some of Ian's friends who were integral to the original startup 25 years ago. Ian is one of the few people I have met who has had the opportunity to bring his friends and contacts from the early days into the business as it grows; there was an incredible mix of talent and experience at the picnic.
The factory tour started just after I arrived. It's a physically large facility, made up of a number of buildings added over the years. I think Ian said they had been in that location for 23 years -- if you looked closely you could see the construction materials changing radically from the first building (pre-dating Axiom) to the last addition ('97, I think).
The background music system in the factory uses M80s hung up high on the wall, so the Muzak quality is extremely high and can probably drown out the milling machines pretty easily. The suggestion about using M80s in a large room seems to hold up pretty well; the pair I was listening to were about 12 feet off the ground, 40 feet apart, and 30 feet from the listening position. Sounded mighty fine...
ONe thing that impressed me (although it didn't surprise me) was how all the important things were first-rate, and everything else was very basic and functional. The office over the production area was very basic and literally used old speakers for furniture (work table for PCs was a plank across two old cabinets, and the bench was a really big cabinet with a cushion on top) but when we walked back down the stairs from the loft you could see that the loft was built with high tech no-squeak engineered joists. The whole place was like that.
They don't throw anything away. For example, a Hsu subwoofer makes an excellent amplifier stand (don't ask ).
You have seen pictures of the dust collection system but the pictures don't show how BIG it is -- a huge hulking tower out back. The vacuum pipe from the work areas is a couple of feet in diameter, and the return air duct had to be 4 or 5 feet across. The factory had much less dust than my house ;(
There really is a soundproof room with double doors and an M80 inside. What they don't tell you is that the room is actually built OUTSIDE the rest of the building so it doesn't disturb the staff.
There is a door labelled something like "subsonic test facility" running off the CAD/CAM area. When you go up the stairs and open the door, you suddenly find yourself outside at rooftop level. Anyone feeling sorry about Ian having to climb up a pole with a subwoofer on his back can rest easy; the stairs lead to a platform where the sub can be mounted to a right angle pole, then the whole assembly (including mikes) swings out over the parking lot to get it away from any surfaces that would interfere with the sound. Very simple, but very slick.
The staff had assembled a slide show with images going back over the years. There were a couple of interesting pics from "Ian's dock party" with a live band; sound system was big amps and speaker arrays each made up of 4 M80s. Also a pic of what I believe were 6 EP600s ganged in the listening room; apparently the bass was awesome
Let's see, what else. Oh yeah, the pretty lady in the red top is Cassandra, who performs final QA. I think Cassie is the one to talk to about getting factory fallout when you need it. Anyways, her two daughters were there, all dressed up for the party, and they latched immediately onto my two dogs. I learned all kinds of interesting things, such as :
- a dog CAN eat its own weight in sausages and hamburgers if you break them into small pieces first
- dogs WILL eat pickles if they have been mixed in with pasta salad so the yummy salad dressing soaks into the pickles
- after 11 years, my faithful dogs would sell me out IN A HEARTBEAT for a girl with a hamburger
Anyways, more tomorrow. I'm hoping I can remember more or at least write more clearly after some sleep.
It was a great trip, and you honestly couldn't ask to meet a nicer group of people. The Axiom folks have generally been with the company for a long time (Ian gently observed that Amie was pretty much the "newbie" at 6 years), and it really shows in both their knowledge of the products and their passion for their work.
Congratulations to everyone at Axiom on an important anniversary and thanks again for the invite !!

Thanks for sharing, John. Hearing what a great time was to be had makes me sad I missed the festivities. I look forward to reading more of the reactions/descriptions of the board members.

Bridgman, good write up. It was nice to meet you and another forum member pitbull(?) at the picnic.
I really enjoyed the day and it's a shame but understandable that more people could not have attended.
First off, thank you very much Axiom for inviting us, it truly was a beautiful day in Muskoka and a great drive (but rushed from Toronto. I don't think I had a record time but the minivan was hauling.
Everyone made me feel very welcome and was eager to answer any question, even if they've been asked it a hundred times.
I was just in a daze pretty much all day though, I had come to the home of Axiom and was ready to finally fill in the rest of my home theater. I had started with a VP150 over a year and half ago and knew as soon as I seen it, especially when I heard it that I needed more Axiom speakers. The day was finally here, but when 3 seats were removed from the minivan the wife was concerned.
The anticipation of getting my new system was overwhelming but to actually go to the place where they were built and to meet the people who dreamed them up and created them was awesome. Originally 60's were on the list, then QS8's and negotiating with the wife up to the day I left landed the 500.
Ian was personally touring us around the factory and it was hard to follow along as there’s sooo many distractions. The WHOLE Axiom speaker line, the 80’s on the wall for the floor workers, the staircase up to the sub pole, speakers absolutely everywhere, things we were possibly not supposed to see, the machinery, the production line with 4 or so different custom finished M80’s, the DSP sub amp processing line, and Whoa...what's that...Michael Jackson...I think....yup, Smooth Criminal....let's go see what's behind the door...the listening room.
The listening room was great, I found myself going in and out all day It consisted of 80's, VP150, QS8 and an EP500 and EP600 on a switch box. We brought in some 50's later in the day. This is the room where they do the double blind tests. I must say no matter what we had on, speaker wise, it just sounded fantastic. As far as I know we were just playing different CD’s with specific tunes to demo the abilities. When I first came in to smooth criminal it was playing with all speakers going and the EP600. WOW, I could not imagine ever needing that much or more. The 600 alone was worth the trip up, what an amazing and scary piece of technology. It was not fair to the 500 when going back and forth. I was debating whether or not to get the 500 after listening to the 600. Don’t get me wrong, I bought it and I love it, but when we switched back and forth…the 600 just moves so much more air, you feel this bad boy.
I never really noticed how loud it was in the room until I went outside for a bit and realized I had a hum in my ears. The sound was so crisp and clean you just wanted more and it didn’t seem to be unbearable. I had no sign of exhaustion/listening fatigue. After a bite to eat back to the room and Tim ( I believe) an Axiom employee was at the controls and had some music just pumping. There was an SPL meter lying on the table and I think it was going from high 90’s to 107? Tim was quick to offer me sit beside him as they have 2 chairs in the sweet spot. It took awhile to get our names as we were a couple inches apart and could not hear the words coming out of our mouths. No one wanted to turn down the music though. I’m not sure how anyone could listening to music much louder and could only ask that Tim or someone posts the actual SPL/Decibels we reached in that room. I do know though that the 2 amps we were using had the Red lights flashing and Peter(?) tapped Tim on the shoulder and pointed over to the amps.
I’ve gone on much longer than anticipated, I have only had a very short time to play with my new set up and I love it. I am also very glad I went with the 500 as it easily is way more than I need for my room. I finally understand the whole Darla Tap scene Any concerns have been squashed and I know if I had a 600 my house would collapse. A few employees and I were joking that Axiom should have a dry wall compound/putty to fix the cracks in the walls the subs will make.
Again, thank you Axiom.

Well I wont try to repeat what was said. The Axiom staff made us all feel as if we worked there. I think everyone got along great and it was a pleasure to meet them. I am sure I talked all their ears off and even made comments in jest The tour was an experience and shows you the time and dedication it takes to make a company grow. As you can see the transitions that were made by the building designs I again want to thank the staff and board members for making it a worthwhile trip. (BTW dont get caught late at night at the start of Algonquin Park no hotels anywhere - although good opportunity...) We saw a lot of history from the first Axioms to the MT80i. Oh and btw here are the new prototypes in the works Prototypes
I will post more pics when in the future from my digital camera I just wanted to post a quick blurb.
Thanks
Andrew

Thanks Amie (and Ian) for putting on the picnic!!!!
I loved the cake, chips, and rest of the food. Really nice to talk to other people with the same interests. Although I had a tour a month ago, it was nice to get a second look. Really interested in the In wall, Out wall speakers comming this fall.
I wish we could have stayed longer but my friend from London need to get back that day.
Thanks again
Paul

How funny is that?! You *totally* got me!
I was so pleased to meet everyone! It was excellent for Alan and I to put 'board' names to the faces. Weather was perfect, guests were even better, and John's dogs have won a permanent spot in all our hearts - what a pair of sweethearts!
Thanks everyone who made our little celebration that much sweeter by joining us - we really appreciated it!

There were over 100 pictures taken! But we were exhausted and didn't get them cropped and put up. If I get a chance before I leave tomorrow, I'll get some more photos up with names; otherwise I promise to do it when I get back. In the shots there, you see Steve (plant manager) with Mike and Cassandra, who are in R & D and Quality Control. Then of course, Alan and Tom. In the bottom corner, Peter is showing some guests the slideshow, and on the wall is Ian circa 1985. The vintage speaker display was a total highlight - I'll get some of those pics up too!

I feel like I'm just not seeing something I should. Where would I find the pictures that are already posted? I can't seem to find them.

I just want to thank the Colquhouns for conducting their lives and business in a way that reflects the world as I'd like it to be.
I regret my inability to attend the function, but Axiom has earned my ongoing loyalty and respect.
My life is happier because of not only my Axiom purchases and the relationships I continue to build on the boards, but also because of the knowledge that new friends were made in this very special setting.
Thank you to Ian, Amie and the Axiom staff.

Thanks Amie.
It was a pleasure to meet you, Ian, Alan, Joe, Tom, and many others.
My wife and I were impressed with the facility.
You could eat off the floors.
I was amazing how the cabinets are CNCed in one piece, and folded over to form the speaker.
What impressed us most was the people who work at Axiom.
Everyone was smiling and very passionate about their work.
I asked Ian during the slideshow what his staff turnover was.
His reply was a serious "Zero"!
Thanks to Joe for taking me and my wife on the tour, as we arrived at 1pm, missing the original tour.
Thanks to Tom for the suggestions on getting rid of my annoying humm from the cable company. Problem solved.
The speaker testing room convinced me (and more importantly my wife) to order an EP500 later this year when our home renovations are completed. Alan provided some excellent input for our room. Hearing some of my favourite demo CDs with this subwoofer was unbelievable!
Definately be ordering some inwalls for the kitchen and hallway when they come out.
It was kewl to see some speaker cabinets for a prototype M100 (3 woofers, 3 mids, 3 tweeters).
It was interesting to hear that the Axiom Website is redundantly hosted in Montreal, and that the Axiom factory has a wireless link on the top of the dust collector pointing at the Dwight public school for their high speed internet access.
Thanks Axiom for a wonderful day.

Thanks for the reports - I can only hope to attend the next Axiom Picnic!
I am sure the pictures do not so the trip justice. I have one question - did the Anti-Standing Wave Cake improve cake eating efficiency and increase the size of the sweet spot?

Prototype??? M100??? What?? You can’t just leave us non-attendees hanging…….
At least give us a tentative release date, purty please? I’ll wait around for them and move the 80’s to the HT and get the 100’s for my stereo system.

Classic moment at the picnic - as the speaker-cake began to melt in the sun, and the M-chocolates sagged, Ian turned to Rebecca, the baker, and said "Guess those are seconds now."

We were all having such a good time at the picnic that we never had a chance to assemble the Coalition for a Ported Center Channel and give Ian a piece of our minds

Uh oh....The Axiom "wish list" is really startin' to grow now!!
Thanks to dllewel, in addition to a 6.5" drivered and ported center; plus a new QS10, also with 6.5s, I'd also like to see a range of Axiom plate amps for our subs that allows us to plug in our own parameters and let the amp bring out the best of our drivers in our own rooms!! Wouldn't that be fun?

Hi Amie!
Well........it's been almost exactly two whole days since you suggested that perhaps we'd be getting to see some more of those 100 plus photos that were taken at the picnic....two whole days! and we're dyin' here!{sad,real tears!}
Also, if there are any new "Bigger Stuff" speakers in the works, uh..could you give us a hint? Some of us may have to come out of retirement .......
