Newby to the HT world;

My Sony receiver is 6,1 x 100w 4-8 ohms, and offer mutiple settings.
I'm looking into upgrading my Sony speakers to Axiom speakers.
My room is 30ft x 20ft x 8ft, with bar section and pool table.
My screen is a Sony LCD 60XBR950.
The wizard suggests M60's front, Vp150 center, QS8's surround, and EP500 sub.
My question is should I first consider replacing my receiver, or will it be up to the task with the Axiom speakers ??? Will I hear a true difference in sound with this receiver ???

I went from Sony HTIB speakers on a Sony DB-940 A/V receiver to Axiom M60's...

Make a difference?

YOU BETCHA!

Does that say that the Sony will continue to satisfy your needs as a HT reciever? Probably not.

I still have my Sony DB-940...it has been relegated to the upstairs gameroom for my son's movies and gaming.

I have a Sherwood Newcastle R-965 as the main driving force behind my M60's now...

Although my son did benefit from this...He now has the M22's I was using as surrounds (rent house previously) when I acquired the QS8's that now hang on the rear wall of our new house.

The STR-DE1075 WILL supply the Axioms with signal which will be a huge step up in sound reproduction (in my honest opinion) from any Sony speakers...

It has plenty of power but the defining factor comes into play when you look at the features it has...Is there something it lacks (PLIIx decoding, 2nd zone / room feed, etc...)?

My financial situation kept me from upgrading the receiver before the speakers as the receiver was (and is) working just fine...I knew I would get a better result from an upgrade in speakers (as I had no mid range at all from the HTIB speakers)...

So, please take this as my .02.

Welcome to the forum...

Good luck in your decision.

WhatFurrer is right in that you will hear a difference in going from the Sony speakers to Axioms. 100 watts per channel will drive the Axioms, and you can upgrade the receiver later. The speakers will be the biggest improvment, especially the EP500. I use the 500 and it is a great sub. I'm sure you will be quite happy with it.

Another vote for upgrading the speakers first. Your current receiver will drive them just fine, and the improvement from upgrading the speakers will be MUCH greater than the improvement from upgrading the receiver.

Just don't get M80s -- the Sony receiver might have trouble driving them because they offer a 4 ohm load.

Well, Thanks the multiple posts that I've read so far in this board, I've made the jump.

The QS8(4) where installed 4 weeks ago, as 16 weeks for factory outlet seemed too long. The delivery was 24 hours, truly amazed by that company so far.

Also, I am thrilled with the results, they sound great.

Now, I just received an e-mail stating that the rest of my order, M60ti(2) VP150(1) and EP500(1) should be delivered either tomorrow or friday.

Factory outlet were from 5 to 8 weeks, depending on models, it took only 4 weeks for the hole package.

So big loud week-end in sight...

Woo hoo !!

If you want to wring the most enjoyment out of the new speakers, hook up the VP150 first, then the M60s, and save the EP500 for last. That way you'll get to enjoy that "holy ^%$#%^" feeling three more times.

Well, 24 hours later, Purolator was at my door to make the delivery, and Thursday 3:00 p.m. I was the nervous new owner of Axiom speakers.

So, since I could not get back to whatever work in process, and since I'm self employed working from home, I've decided to set the work aside and get busy with the installation of these new speakers.

My house is a 100 year old 2 storey building, connected to a 1 storey (8 x 12) entrance connected to a 2 storey stable transformed into an office and work shop on ground floor and a Home Theater on the 2nd floor.

So, no matter how loud the manroom gets, the house remains quiet. (so I tought)

Anyway, my first trial DVD "The Fifth Element Superbit", set to DTS.

I had previously set the receiver to whatever settings I had in mind, and was ready to go.

So it started, sound was loud and clear, a lot more powefull than with my old speakers.

But as the alien spacecraft started to land in my HT, I tried to retreive my sense, dry up the drewling, and locate the remote that I dropped as it began.

The EP500 is a lot more sub than the one I had, I mean the hole building was shaking and trembling.

Meanwhile, my wife, in the house, in the next building, was trying to locate thru the kitchen window who's bulldozer was passing by in order to explain the vibrations...

Holy #@@%%@@# isn't big enough of an expression, this is a lot more than I was expecting.

The tweeking of the sub was the trickiest part, but was obtained after moving it 3 to 4 times, and ajusting the levels thru different sound source.

Fifth element Superbit never sounded better.
The Incredibles, well can't find the words...

So, the DVD section is in good hands, now on with the music, I thought.

But, unfortunately, it was past midnight, and had to go to bed...

The music is tonight... well, now...

Well, setting the music part was the most fun.

Apart lowering the volume on the sub, from 9 o'clock to 7+ aprox., everything previously set was to my likings.

The set up of my speakers make a circle of appx. 12 ft.,
the M60's are 9 ft. apart, toed in by about 1 in.

All speakers set to small, crossover to 90db, (front M60's sounds better at 70db, but my receiver does't offer individual settings) volume increased by 7db for center and 2db for surround side and back, and it's "Chair de poule" for the hole threat...

Also, even if 2 channels for music CDs is terrific, I really enjoy keeping on the "neo 6 music" decoder on the receiver for any CD, as it makes no sense to keep the QS8 quiet.

And by the way, music represents the most significant change in the appreciation of these new speakers.

The clarity of the vocals and instruments is astronomical.
I heard new sounds, sounds I didn't notice before...

Testing material:
Eric Clapton's Crossroads guitar festival (DTS)
Peter Gabriel's Play the Video (DTS)
Al Jarreau's Greatest hits (CD)
Celine Dion's Color of my Love (CD)
Van Morrison's Philosopher's Stone (CD)
Chicago's greatest hits, the Heart of Chicago (CD)

Now, a whole collection of DVDs and CD's is to be rediscovered, I might have to quit my day job,
I'm in love...

The radius of 12 ft. is from seating point...
The total circle is apprx. 24 ft.... including compensation for the height of the QS8....

For me that was the biggest surprise. There were a number of cases where I couldn't quite make out what instrument was playing, but with the Axioms it was obvious that there were two different instruments playing (mostly) the same notes. It really is like cleaning the windows after a few years, it's amazing how clear everything is.

That reminds me, I have to go clean the &^%&(%^ windows again. Bye

Terrific news! I'm glad you are happy with the speakers. My previous statement that you would be quite happy with the EP500 must have been an understatement. Sorry about that

Congrats and enjoy.
