 CDs through DVD player

Do I have to hook up the rca cables to play CDs through my DVD player in addition to the tolslink cable or will the CDs play through the toslink?The receiver is a Denon 985s and the DVD player is just a run of the mill Pioneer(Axiom and Denon purchase used up all available funds for now so will have to upgrade the DVD player later).

CDs will run over digital just fine. The only time you have to use analogs is with DVD-A and SACD, which I don't think that DVD player has.
