What's the point of a player that can upscale to 1080p if there are no devices that currently accept such an input. Does it soudn like a good player? Sure - the price seems a little low, but the styling is cool. Also, if you wait till 1080p is more "standard" or even mainstream, or at least until there is another competitor, prices are sure to drop further.

Every television on the market as of now DO NOT accept any 1080p signals. Yea, its pretty amazing several companies can sell 1080p but forget to mention you can't ever get 1080p from HDMI/DVI/component.

What I do know is the new Sony SXRD tv's upconvert everything to 1080p (anything from 480, 720, and 1080i). I'm pretty sure all of the other 1080p tvs do the same thing.

From what I have seen anyway the high end TV's usually do an excelent job of upconverting to their native resolution (Which is all you are going to see anyway)so I'm not sure why you would need a DVD player to do it for you.

So you are saying if you buy a 1080p TV now that it won't display 1080p with HDDVD or Blue Ray or whatever wins out as the source for the material?

Pretty much....quite amazing that current hardware won't accept true 1080p signals from any devices coming out in the next 6-12 months. If the backlash gets too high, manufacturers might provide firmware updates (if thats even possible) to allow it.

Also, dont forget the HDMI spec is being upgraded (to 1.3 i think) and is not backwards compatible with previous versions. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here...that's the gist I got from some articles.

The HP info is news to me. Good if true - hopefully the manufacturers will stop the arms race some and concentrate on making current HD technology, which is still in its infancy as far as widespread adoption, and make sure that the TVs we buy today are as good as they can be. 1080p really is the holy grail - but I'm not in a hurry to get there tomorrow if it comes at too sever a price. Today, 1080p is a marketing ploy (higher resolution figures must mean a better set, right?). This ignore some very basic concepts about converting signals to match native resolutions - a hump which we still are over with regard to regular 1080i or 720p sets.
