Hi all,

I just moved into a new house and I'm planning on finishing my basement and including a new music room (2-channel music only, no HT or anything).

In my old house, I had a 7' x 10' x 13' room (roughly), and I found my M3Ti's and EP125 sub to be great performers. My new room will likely be something close to 8.5' x 13.5' x 22'.

Will my speakers and sub still be sufficient for this larger space? Any thoughts are welcome; thanks!

Other equipment:
PREAMP: Marantz 2230 + Monolithic PS-1 (phono)
AMP: Dynaco ST-70
FRONT END (analog): Rega Planar 3
FRONT END (digital): Sony SCD-CE775 SACD/CD changer

Can't say much about how the sub will perform, but in my old listening room of 12x28, our M3s as mains also did a great job!!

Great, now you've got me wondering if my M22ti's combined with an EP350 (and four QS8's for surrounds and rears) will suffice for my basement.

Hi Spence; can't say much about the M22s, but..uh, when we moved into a new house with a 16x28x8 listening room, the dear M3s kinda just, uh..went away.

Seriously, The room you're talking about might just be a bit large for M22s. Best bet would be M60s or even the M80s in a space that cavernous!!

It depends a lot on how the room is arranged, specifically the distance from speakers to listening position. If the room is that big but the speakers and seats are over to one side or corner the M22s would be fine. If you are using the whole area for HT and are sitting way back from the mains you may not be able to play as loudly as you like.

VERY VERY roughly, the main and center speaker size is a function of how far away you are sitting from them (and how loud you want them to play) while the sub is more a function of how big the whole room is. Dr. Hsu has been recommending a "sub right behind the sofa" position in a number of cases and that seems to be a great solution for a big room.

Same goes for the M3 system... depends on distance from the speakers. Totally oversimplifying, you could think of M2s as being ideal for 7-8 feet from the listener, M3s and M22s maybe 8-10 feet, M50s and M60s 10-14 feet and with M80s even further back. Listening distance is not the only factor, but the ol' inverse square law sure makes distance something to think about.

Great! I had to mortgage my soul to my wife to upgrade from some large Cerwin Vega's to the smaller M22's and I find myself on the edge of being under driven before I even power my system up (basement is still a few weeks away from being finished).

Perhaps I should sell my (still unconnected) M22's to jefpar as an upgrade, then see about upgrading to a pair of 60's.

In addition to the EP350, I've got a secondary "down firing" 15" Cerwin Vega sub to help suplement and balance out low frequencies in the space.

My listening area is pretty much centered at around 13'. In between the M22's and QS8's with about 27' between front and back speakers. Another pair of QS8's are mounted about 12' from the front, and between 10' to 13' to either side of center.

I have an understanding and loving wife, but if I tell her that I've got to upgrade my main speakers... I could see myself as a resident of the basement.

jefpar? It looks as if we are in the same boat! Stick with what we've got for a while and work toward some sort of compromise or trade that will allow you to upgrade in the future.

...in my case, she'll probably want a new car. :|

Hmmm....you could take the M22s and position them where they look their absolute Smallest and most insignificant in that large space, and say something like: "Waddaya think?"

...hey....could work

Interesting idea!

Yes, I *would* like to try the M3's (I love 'em dearly) in my new space before jumping toward any sort of upgrade. And it'll be summer (at least) before my room will be ready, so ... it'll be a while before I reach any conclusions.

Thanks for your thoughts, everybody.

I don't think my wife would see them as too small (even in the worst of locations).

Going larger may not be much of an option as I had also sold my wife on smaller speakers (I have yet to sell off my 12" 3-way Cerwin Vega mains, and 6" 2-way surrounds) that would take up less floor space and be less potentially harmful to our toddler if one fell over.

I'm in the same situation as JefPar. I'll be hanging with my M22's for the forseeable future. If anything, it is my hope that they will sound better than the CV speakers I had been running.

I'm planning to hang on to the 15" CV sub (mentioned above) so bass response in the large-ish room should not be an issue.
