Can these be mounted on the ceiling (which will be the rears of a 7.1 system)?

Nope.

Sirquack does it with Omnimount brackets.

Why not? Could the 8s be mounted with the backs toward the ceiling (allowing for wiring, etc)?

Sorry, misspoke. I mean, yes they can be mounted on the ceiling. On their backs would be difficult, because there's nothing holding them into the T brackets in that case. When you wall mount on T brackets, gravity holds them into the T brackets. Think about it.

Gravity. True, but I expect the speaker could be mounted with some modifications to the bracket and a bracing method.

Wrong, they are not Omnimount brackets, but rather shelf brackets from Menards.

Rueben, again why would you add Q's for the rears and keep bookshelfs for the left/right? If anything it should be the other way around as the rear channels have lots less information.

These don't look like Omnibrackets to me..
