I have an "assortment" of DVD players at my house. Several very cheap ones, and my nicer Panasonic S97 in my home theater.
I took a few days making backup copies of my kids' movies that were scratched up to heck (see other post on that one) and now the newly burned, dual layer DVD +R discs work on the cheap players flawlessly, but on my S97 SOME of them stop during the "FBI warning" and such. Others don't. Basically, it goes through the FBI and "Don't copy" warnings, then hits the "this film is rated G" or whatever screen and freezes on 4 of the 7 that I did already, but again, only on my Panasonic S97.
Can anyone think of why this would be? I quickly glanced at the Panasonic web site and didn't find any helpful information.
I would think that if it was something with the dual layer media that they all would fail, or fail at the same spot, but this is brand name Memorex media which I have had great success with in the past.
The only other thing that I can think of is that I put DVD labels on the discs, but they are REALLY close to being dead centered on them, so I don't think that they are off balance or anything, and again, my cheap $25 DVD player plays them, as does this really off brand, "Walmart special" home theater in a box piece of crap thing.
Ideas?
I have relatives coming for the weekend starting Saturday afternoon and they haven't seen my home theater and I would really like to show it off, and one of the discs that looks really good is one of these backup copies of the scratched ones. HELP!

Nick,
First, anyway the data was corrupt before you burned them? (because of the scratches on the originals?) If not, the only other 2 things I could think of are: 2) They were burned at a higher speed than the media was rated for, and 3) Some players are more sensitive to +R media than -R. The burn has to be perfect or they choke on it. (Ties back into the first 2 points)
Don't know if any of this applies, or even helps.

Burned at the rated media speed of 2.4x with a very highly rated burner. The S97 says it supports the format as well, and the other discs work fine. I just find it funny that they stop at almost the exact same spot (just before the menu comes up). I've used "tried and true" methods for making backups of the DVDs too that is supposed to work. I went back and looked at the logs after the initial "read" of the originals, and none of them had any read errors and read retries, so the source should have been good at the time of the read.
I wonder if my S97 is dirty or something??? Seems like a long shot, and stil doesn't explain why they stop at almost the exact same spot.
Thanks anyway.

I'm frustrated like you. My Denon 2900 won't play my bootleg DVD concerts (both +R & -R), but my parents $30 Koss from Sears plays them flawlessly. This isn't the first time I've heard about cheap players playing more than the expensive ones. I don't know why that is, but it really makes me mad!

sonic, I also have a Denon 2900 and had troubles with it playing my burned DVDs. Then Ray told me about how finicky they are about media and told me to try Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs. That did the trick and I haven't had a problem since.

To me it sounds like a disc problem rather than the player, I guess you've probably cleaned the disc, thats always seem to do the trick for me unless they were damaged.

I discovered my problem. I bought Dual Layer DVD +R discs because that is the only dual layer media my "highly rated" Benq DW 1655 burner can support, but I see right in my S97 user manual, that it doesn't support +R media. Even though some discs worked, it isn't "officially" supported. I also was reading that if I changed the "bitset" on DVD Decrypter or Nero when burning to "DVD-ROM" it increases the compatability chances, but I think that my quickest and easiest gaurenteed solution is to get another cheap DVD player for my home theater just to play my burned backups. I should be able to pick up another one for $25 like I did a year or so ago. And if it isn't the best, I will use it in our bedroom and move that one to the home theater.
Fun, fun....
Thanks everyone.

I have a DW1655 and if you set it to burn +R as -Rom it will play in all players providing the disc is of reasonable quality. Some of the dyes they use in cheap discs just don't reflect as well. Also +R duals are the only dual layer discs in production and avaialable right now. I see you used some Memorex DL which have a less than stellar quality rating among The DVD burner crowd, SL seem to be OK. Most say only Verbatim has quality +R dual layer discs. I would recommend you try a disc scan in Nero CD-DVD Speed and see what the quality scores are. Most of my Memorex DL come in at 30 - 50 range and any Verbatims I have seen come in at 90+. You could always just use SL discs and try cutting out the menus and extras, most movies can be reduced to about 60-80% and still look good on the big screens.
I am waiting for the Lightscribe to come out on DL. I love making the labels.

But for those that do need them, see here.
Jake, thanks for the tip on the memorex! Good to know. I'm still on my first 25 set of Sony SL -R's (8x). So far, no coasters!

Nick, I've had lots of problems with my S97S skipping/freezing during movies that were ripped onto DVD+R formats. Even though people on AVS will tell you the S97S works fine with +R, I have my doubts. Like you said the manual does not mention this support. Also, I've even had problems with some -R disks from Cheap manufacturers like memorex and imation. When I use Verbatim/Taiyo Yuden/etc. I have better luck.
This is one reason I plan to build a HTPC. I NEVER have problems with computer based players playing + or - R formats. I'm actually thinking about selling my S97S or using it on a different TV in our house, as it does work great with store/rental DVD's.
I'm thinking about building a small footprint HTPC to sit in m AV rack, and then have it networked to one of these http://www.lime-technology.com .
