Here is a list of the 10 most common grammar mistakes.

Not so much grammar, but my peeves are:

1. "Could care less" vs. "Couldn't care less"
2. "alot" vs. "a lot"
3. ALL CAPS TYPING

But hey, the next boo-boo will likely be my own!

The one that bugs me is when people write "your invited" instead of "you're invited" and the like... OK now I can go and get a life

Let's not forget "bring" vs. "take". I ususally take something home from where I am, not bring it home.

'Then' being used in lieu of 'than'.

Overall, I'm guilty as charged!

Oh no you don't! I may strive for excellence, but I miss the mark quite often. I do fairly well in the above 10 examples (though I think I blow the i.e/e.g thing a bunch), but I make numerous other gaffs.

Ironically, I didn't do all that well in my high school English classes. But, I do love the language, and am awed by, and greatly admire, those who can express a thought in a succinct way that virtually eliminates any misunderstanding ("succinct" is NOT my forte ).

My current pet peeve, which I've mentioned before, is the misuse, and unnecessary addition of the word "of."

No: That's not too bad of a weather forecast.
No: He's too good of a writer to make that error.

Yes: That's not too bad a weather forecast.
Yes: He's too good a writer to make that error.

This bothers me because it's not only incorrect, but by adding an unnecessary word it makes the language more cumbersome.

I don't mind, and even encourage, errors that, in fact, simplify the language, such as spelling "through," "thru." GREAT! Let's shorten that sucker up.

Likewise, I'm sure you've noticed my frequent use of the schwa "a" (sounds like the "a" in the word "ago," i.e "uh")

Examples: I'm gonna get new speakers. I shoulda kept my mouth shut, rather than I'm going to get new speakers and I should have kept my mouth shut.

Certainly not correct, but a lot simpler.

Also, use of slang, or a malapropism, or misuse of the language which creatively expresses a thought or idea often can be sheer joy.

Well I told you succinct isn't my forte.

Extra credit. The word forte, pronounced correctly when intended to mean a thing that a person does particularly well; a strong point, sounds like the thing you used to build in a tree, or where you took basic training in the Army, and not as if the word was spelled "fortay." Pronounced "fortay," the word means "loud" as in a direction to a musician. "Play that cadenza forte."

(Mrs. Kellam, my senior English teacher would be proud of me...................................and AMAZED! )

There is no one quite so definitive on the subject as Bob the Angry Flower.

I also hate the bass/base one. One is a fish. The other is something you put things on. Where's the confusion?

Let me first say , English is not my native language (as most of you'd figured it out by now) Now, the words ‘base’ and ‘bass’ has always confuse me; both words are pronounce the same if ‘bass’ refers to the musical instrument; isn’t? But when you’re referring to the fish or beer brand it’s pronounce different? … odd.

You've got it. It's because bass and bass are different words!
Bass: fish, ale (named after fish?)
Bass: low sounds, a singer of low sounds, a musical instrument that produces low sounds
Base: None of the above.

They all drive me crazy. Other than "gonna."

And no one's mentioned there, their, and they're.

I think the your and you're errors are particularly egregious.

Also, quotation marks are not to be used for emphasis. They're for <gasp> quotes!

I think everyone should visit the engrish.com website. Everytime I go there, I laugh so hard it hurts! My Okinawan mother suffers from a bit of Engrish herself, but finds some of the stuff outrageously funny as well. In my opinion, my mom actually speaks English quite well, and has the best pronunciation that I've ever heard from a native Japanese speaker. However, when my friends meet her for the first time, they have a hard time understanding her.

But, here's some funny stuff! When growing up, I learned incorrect words from my mom until I was able to read and realize what I was saying. For example (e.g. whatever!), I thought pastrami was pastalami until I finally read the package and saw that pastrami contained an 'R', but not an 'L'! I also had met another girl with an Okinawan mother who did the same thing. Up until she was 12 yrs. old, she asked for "macloni and cheese" for lunch because that's how her mom pronounced it! My mom still says funny things like "Salivation Army" no matter how many times we correct her. She has a wonderful sense of humor about it though and laughs along with us.

Might as well mention that audio spelling favorite "seperate" , used by those who can't remember from grade school that "There's a rat in separate".

On another board I recently noticed a terrific combo screwup; after making certain changes to his components, they caused them to "...loose there single."
