My wife recently got into whiskey tonics. Works best with cheaper whiskey, such as Jim Beam. \:\)

No. Tonic water, like I wrote.

Ah, didn't know the difference. What I actually mean to type was "carbonated water."

Now I know the difference.

With whisky I like 7up, 7&7 though I like tonic water with about anything. Rum and Tonic are awesome especially with a lot of the amber/dark rums. One of my favorites. Gin is still my favorite liquor of choice- neat or mixed.

I’m armed and I’m drinking. You don’t want to listen to advice from me, amigo.

Two things...

1. Unlike most threads, this one is *really* worth re-reading from the beginning every so often.

2. A margarita made with rum is really good, arguably better than many tiki drinks, and deserves a better name than "rum-rita". The obvious name (daiquiri) doesn't quite fit because it really needs an orange liqueur rather than sugar syrup for best results :

- juice of 1 lime (1.5 oz - 2 oz)
- 2 oz rum (I used Appleton V/X)
- 1/2 oz Cointreau
- ice cubes
- some shaking

Don't think I have the proportions quite right yet. I think the best taste was with a bit more lime juice than rum, ie a fairly tart taste. I did a brief "deep dive" into tiki drinks, including making things like "cinnamon infused syrup" and buying a bottle of Pernod so I could add six drops plus a dash of Angostura, concluded that all the tiki drinks were starting to taste alike, and decided to go back to simple drinks.

Make that three things...

Reading back through the thread, it appears that I may have talked about Fog Cutters and Samoan Fog Cutters interchangeably. Samoan Fog Cutters are blended, while Fog Cutters are shaken and have a bit more rum. A well made Fog Cutter is still hard to beat, and IMO maybe the finest of the tiki drinks...

Thanks for the reminder about tonic water. If you haven't picked up some cans of coconut water, that's also worth a try. Very refreshing, almost enough that you can convince yourself mixed drinks are healthy ;\)

OK, the animal mystery is solved. Went outside this morning and saw a big black weasel-like animal hanging out in the woods about 30 feet from the house. It went up on its hind legs (just like a meerkat), looked at me for a minute, then scampered off.

I was surprised how big it was - this one was maybe the size of a fox or a bit larger. My first thought was that I was looking at a fisher, but starting to wonder if it might have been a wolverine.

EDIT - looks like wolverines are normally brown rather than black, and tend to live further north. I'm staying with "fisher".

Maybe I'll continue this in the "got coyotes ?" thread.

John, you must have some ginormous limes where you live. No way I'm getting 2 oz of juice from one of those green ping-pong balls we seem to get. That sounds pretty darn tart. When I make Margaritas (always rocks) I use 4 tequila, 3 triple sec, 2 lime juice.

You have to pick out the heavy limes with thin, light coloured skins. They normally give between 1.5 and 2 oz when selection is good.

Average limes seem to give more like an ounce, and I've had some that didn't even have 1/2 oz. That 4:1 variation sure makes it hard to get a consistent taste. When I'm mixing drinks for guests I usually measure the amount of juice before mixing and either scale the other ingredients or cut up another lime.

Lemons are much more consistent, for some reason, and work surprisingly well in margaritas as long as nobody sees you mixing their drink.
