If the grumblings are coming from outside the HT room then a second layer of drywall with a slight air gap works really well.
If the grumblings are coming from inside the room then treating the area around spouse's seating position with 2-4" thick rigid fiberglass or foam will absorb a lot of the offending frequencies.
It's normally easier to preclude or delay the grumbling by doing something nice just before the speakers arrive than it is to block out the grumbling after the fact.

Just turn up the Axioms  Seriously, explain the pros and cons, maybe she'll see your point. And tell her based on the room size we recommend the M60s. (We recommend either, but certainly the 60s if you can swing it).

Luckily, the Axiom speakers not only have a pretty small footprint, they also are superbly crafted speakers even in the default vinyl. I've read more than one post here that mentions the wife's reaction as milder-than-expected to downright positive.

My wife saw them and said that the 80's I got were HUGE. Once the 600 showed up, she almost ripped me a new one...hehe. Finally, I set it all up, she heard it...and started to turn it up herself...
Guess you just have to like music, and toys.

You, my friend, sound like you know a thing or two about noise cancellation technology. Now that I know such a simple solution exists, I'm going for the M80s and 1-2 EP600s.

When I took down the Bose cubes and put in the M80s the wife frowned but said they didn't look too bad. When the slow dance music started, she was all smiles.

They would obviously be perfectly matched, the VP150 can handle more power than the W22s, they don't take up floor space like the M60s/M80s (a spouse requirement) and they can be aimed--unlike the W22s. On the flipside, the VP150 is obviously not designed for this purpose. It also operates at 6 ohms, whereas the W22s operate at 8 ohms--not sure if that makes a difference.
Get the M60s with the nice wood finish to match your decore. You get to try them out for a month, once you got them in there looking great and sounding even better you are likely to change her mind.
