Considering I am stuck on the Sony 60" Wega, are these the basic components I need:

stand
5:1 system
dvd player
cables/wires
receiver

Based on liking the M60 system, what kind of cables/wires would I look at and what do they cost.

How about a recommendation on a receiver.

I will mostly be using this to watch movies etc, with the occational music and dvd of a live concert

I recommend you get your cables from Monoprice.com. Good quality, very reasonable prices.

Cables are a controversial issue. Some feel expensive exotic cables are worth it. Others, like me, feel that as long as the cable is well made, it will do the job. Only you can decide where your comfort level is.

The specific cables you'll need will depend on the inputs and outputs available on your equipment, and how you wish to connect everything.

Here is a tutorial explaining the various types of video and audio connections and their respective advantages and disadvantages.

LOL! It indeed can be a bit daunting. But, if you'll just hang in there and keep learning, you'll get the hang of it. If I can do it, you can do it. We've all been newbies struggling to figure this all out. Besides, you have your friends and us to lead you astray.

The primary purpose of this forum is to help others (and to poke fun at one another while doing it ). Just keep studying and relying on your friends. And, when you can't seem to find the answer you're looking for, ask your question here and we'll do our best to answer it.

>>OMG, I think I'm gonna throw up

You have no idea how many of us were just like you man. A month ago I was so overwhelmed with decisions I had no idea what to do.

But now I know pretty much all I need to know in order to make a good purchase and actually understand what items I need for each piece of equipment.

The more you read, the more you'll feel less overwhelmed.

Look at it like a hobby, like you're just getting into it and want to learn all there is to learn. Also never forget that the people on this board are EXTREAMLY kind, they helped me calm down more than once. Don't feel shy to ask what you think are "stupid" questions.

There is no such thing as a stupid question! (regarding electronics... )
