Since I will be having my home theatre ready for Feb, I'm gonna have to stock up on DVD movies. I've already given my Christmas list of DVDs out to santa, but I want to know from you what the best movies are from a surround sound (and I guess effects) point of view. Here is what I am considering.....what are your thoughts:
Terminator 3 Nemo Jurassic park Star Wars 1,2,3 Alien Top Gun King Kong Superman Returns

You really don't want to hear my thoughts about some of those movies.

Finding Nemo is a surprisingly good workout for both audio and video. SW EpIII will of course be the high bar for audio and visual gizmos.
And don't worry about Ken. The majority of us don't look for "high art" in all of our video selections. Although the right to snark is assumed and encouraged.

As mentioned in your other post, the new Pirates of the Caribbean has excellent surround sound.

Chips,
If you ask for Jurassic Park, make sure to qualify it by stating that you want the version that includes DTS...
You DO have to look for it...otherwise it is normal Dolby Digital 5.1.
Just a tip from someone who has that particular version...by the way, if you get that specific version, it will come with BOTH DTS and DD 5.1 versions on the disk...
Open Range is a good one, if you like westerns.

Chips,
If you do a search, there have been a number of threads covering this topic.
Even having said that, I would check out:
War of the Worlds - One of the benchmarks for Sub abuse. Even with the DSP in my EP600 reigning in my lunacy when I've had too much to drink, I've had it cough on the trypod scene. (Disclaimer: I'd had ALOT to drink and I was WAY overdriving it. Thankfully no permanent damage.)
Master and Commander - Spectacular surround and LFE effects
U-571 - Ditto
Cars (or any Pixar movie for that matter)
Shawn
Epic 80/600 + M3's + M3 Algonquins + M2 Computer + EP125 I think I'm developing an addiction.

Lord of the Rings takes the cake on all these movies..
There is constant surround the whole movie, whether it be special effects or simply the musical score. I love the mix on these movies. The music is constantly playing on the surrounds.

For just showing off the system LFE capabilities, I throw in the Tri-pod scene. It's pretty impressive and I can kick folks out of the room in about ten minutes.
As Robb mentioned, LOTRs is a great movie (all of them) for continued sound effects.
Another good one is the Harry Potter movies. The last one in particular. The second one had my girlfriend swatting the air behind her head when the keys were flying around (forgot what part of the movie that was, but it sure was funny watching her try to swat nothing but air).

Any favorite scene recommendations from LOTR for both video and sound? I watched part of Two Towers last night, and expect that ROTK is waiting in my mailbox now.

Its difficult for me to pick a favourite scene in LOTR ROTK...the whole movie is quite simply amazing.
I haven't watch it for about a year now, I have had the urge for a VERY long time, but I am saving the experience for when I have a full blown theatre (should be within the next 6 months)

Well, if you are talking about ANY of LOTR movies, Bilbo's birthday party with the fireworks gives your surrounds a good workout and an amazing imersive scene in Fellowship of the ring.
It also has a fair bit of rear channel action (the 6th channel).

Not first time overall, just first time since I got the new TV a couple of months back. First time for all 3 was the day they came out in theatres. I don't want to watch too much of them right now. I am planning a Saturday in January to have a couple of friends over to do a marathon session of all 3 in one day, so I don't want to water down the anticipation and excitement by watching them before that. There are 3 of us so far. I don't really want more then 4 or 5, just because of optimal viewing of the TV/sound setup.

Ok I see. I have yet to watch all three in a single day. Sounds like fun.
I never saw the trilogy in the theatre...and didn't have much interest in it(thought it was stupid ) until I happened to see a few scenes of The Two Towers on dvd. I was hooked after that!

Nope! Never seen them either. I've tried watching the first one twice now. Fallen asleep within the first 20 minutes both times.

The first 40 minutes or so of the first one is a lot of intro it seems to the first time viewer without the background knowledge (at least it was for my wife). I think things pick up after that, although she pretty much gave up at that point the one time I tried to get her to watch. Maybe the new TV will help

And for a good choice in movies just head about 40km east on the 401 and show up at Bridgey's place... he'll set you up with anything from his collection.
Well, no LOTR, though.

Have you tried watching it at a decent hour? You see, movies are like sex. More enjoyable when the participants aren't tired.

>>I have tried a few times with no success. BORing... Oh how you are missing out on one of the joys of life...Peter Jacksons LOTR. In my opinion it is the best Epic fantasy movie series ever made. It has the ability to transfer you from your living room into another world. Not alot of movies can do that for me, and when one movies does that, I know that its good. If you find it boring, try watching past the first 20 mins of the Fellowship of the ring...

I have 12-15 DVDs I've purchased and have yet to watch. More ridiculous to some, I'm sure, is that I have yet to watch the HD-DVD of King Kong that I got with my player... I only watched about 5 mins to see what the PQ was like....
Music I generally get to right away....it doesn't require 2-hour blocks of uninterupted time....

After seeing them in the theaters, I felt I was the only man on earth that wasn't overly impressed.
I haven't watched them on DVD yet and I've been curious to try them out again to see if my opinion on them has changed.

I'm a huge Matrix fan... I have the fancy 10 disk DVD collection. Honestly, I wasn't overly blown away by it. But the last time I sat down and watched them all I didn't have my setup completely finished (new sub). This holiday season I'm going to watch them all again.

Yeah, I suppose so!! I sometimes buy things on sale, with the intent to watch......but life gets in my way.
Besides, with the price clear out that happen routinely, it is cheaper to buy and stockpile for the night somebody says "Hey, lets rent...."

For me, it's more like the TiVo's full, and we should really watch something on that. Or I get home, and I realize that those Netflix movies have been sitting around for weeks, and I should really watch those... I usually end up watching my DVDs when I'm home sick.

Don't overlook the Pixar movies. Whether you have kids or not, Cars and The Incredibles both are THX certified and have 6.1 surround. They both sound great!

Heard another good movie scene for sub woofer addicts. Last night we watched "XXX". The Vin Diesel movie, not porn. Been re-watching some old DVDs lately with the new system to hear the difference and one scene really stood out. The Avalanche scene near the end has some impressive bass that lasts a very long time as he snowboards ahead of it. Thought it might be a good scene if you are doing testing and needed LFE that last long enough to move around the room and what not.

We watched 300 on BluRay last night……way cool…. Massive surround effects throughout the whole movie.

I can't bring myself to watch it just because of how obnoxious the main guy is in the trailers. I want to like that director, but there always seems to be something keeping me from watching his movies.

Too much blood? Lol, ya I can see her saying that. My girl cringed a few times. They did follow history fairly well though, I thought anyway.
We watched the Warriors on HD/DVD last night. Sound sucked, but they sure did a great job with the HD transfer. That’s the first time I’ve seen that movie since I was a teenager.
