"Be careful as sustained tones can cause damage to a driver; overheats the voice coil." ... "Risk of thermal damage"

Enlightenment please?

hello there,
thanks for the response and your curiousity

dont know why it happens, thats just what it sounds like.
like i said it was more of a clicking sound like dominos falling. maybe it is something in the soundcard turning on and off. maybe at 20 hz the soundcard sees the wave as a DC voltage offset instead of an ac wave. not sure. this is on a creative labs audigy card, flavor of the month purchased about 2 years ago.

how about you download the free software, generate a sub 20 hz tone, and let us know what kind of sound comes out of your computer . maybe the software is flawed ? at 20 hz per socond it wouldnt be too hard to count the pulses of a one second duration visually on your monitor ?

i spent about 5 minutes downloading the app and being sure it did what i remembered it did. i think it would have uses when trying to find the sweet/flat spot for your sub in your room. as the avia disk i have will sweep the low tones, but doesnt just play a low tone steadily.

i do think it is good advise not to overheat the coil though.

hth

This question came up quite obliquely a while back, when someone suggested a surf of this site: rotary woofers . This link How low can we hear? shows some research of hearing tests going down below 20 Hz.
Have fun reading!

Good answers and references.

I hope you will forgive me if I don't try the experiment myself with my own PC speakers. If the last link's chart data is correct in saying that you need at least 75 to 80 DB to hear below 20Hz, I'm afraid that the noise I will hear is the sound of my PC speakers blowing up as I try to get the volume anywhere near that high.

Great conversation though. My Avia test CD just arrived in the mail last night so I'm currently addicted to chatting about this stuff.

Next month it might be back to how to raise my center diff. skid plate without needing to get into a CV driveshaft or will I really need a new video card when Vanguard is released for the PC.

I vote yes on the new video card and as a mechanic are you talking about the double cardan(U-Joint) style or the actual CV with boot style driveshaft. The boot style is terrible for off road apps.

Double Cardan to be specific. I have 3"'s of lift and 33"s for tires but I'd like to go either go to 35"s or go flatbelly. Either way, with with zero or minimal body lift and without dropping the dif. It's a Rubicon so I already have a SYE. Send me a personal message if you have further advice. I'm always glad to get it but I don't want to hijack this thread. eerrr anymore...
