Yes Eric, the surrounds, especially if it's a 5.1 setup without back surround speakers, should be at least a little farther back than the listening position, rather than in front of it.

That makes sense, why would you want surround coming in front of you anyway. lol So you think its best to have the bottom of the qs8 flush to the bottom rear wall rather than to have a wall bracket and have it slightly lower where it hangs maybe 1 foot down more? How far apart should the speaker be from the side wall from the rear wall?

Not critical; the common suggestion is about 3' above ear level. Since they're still "side surrounds" even when mounted on the back wall, they should be separated to the side as far as possible, to within a few inches of the side wall on the left, to give the outside left tweeter a little "bounce room".

Alternative suggestion for 7.1: sitting opposite back edge of fireplace, left surround directly to the side about 1' above fireplace, right surround now has room directly opposite it. Back surrounds about 1' lower and 2' inside of present positions.

I was thinking side walls such as where the window is (either above the window or between the window and fireplace)and where that brown furniture is on the other side at the right opening which will not be there since its the owner's stuff.

If this will put the surrounds adjacent to, or even better, a little behind (about 1-2 ft) your listening position that is the optimal position. If not, go with John's advice.
