I have a Denon 3805 which doesn't have the HDMI switching capability. I have several devices that connect to my HDTV through component/S-video/composite which I would like to upconvert to HDMI through a receiver. That means I have to purchase a new receiver with this function which I don't want to do. My question is that has anyone tried this? Does it really make the component/S-video connection much better? I would love to have only 1 connection (HDMI) to my TV but if it doesn't improve picture quality, it doesn't justify the cost for me. Thanks for your help.

It really depends on what you use to "up convert". Some video processors do better than others. There is a night / day difference when I route SD video through mine (DVDO VP-50), but it's not exactly cheap either. Currently, I am not impressed with any VP chips in ANY receiver on the market. The only exception would be the Anthem AMV or D2. Those machines are about $6000 and up. Then you have to buy amp's to go with them. I had an HK745 and tried its video processing. It’s quite pathetic in comparison to the VP-50.

The new Denon's will have one of the best chips on the market right now for video processing. You might as well wait for them or pick yourself up an external VP. All the others are a waste of money in my opinion. Just because they can up convert, that doesn’t mean they do it well.

Oh, I reckon I should have asked what your disply resolution is before rambling on about VP's..... Anthing might just be a waste of money depending on your display.

I just purchased a Onkyo 604 receiver over the one their lower model for this exact reason. In retrospect, i dont think it's worth the extra $100 i paid. There is nothing that limits the quality of video over component EXCEPT for the copyright laws, thus HDMI. Have you considered a switcher from monoprice.com?
I found irritating to learn that current receivers only support 5.1 via hdmi. I would hold off the hdmi till ver1.3 (&7.1) is supported via receivers.

VB, it should be kept in mind that what you're asking about isn't upscaling lower resolution signals to 720 or 1080, but simply converting analog video signals on component, etc. cables to digital signals that can be carried on one HDMI cable. No improvement in quality results; the advantage for the user is the single cable; the advantage for the industry is the copy protection inherent in HDMI.

There are upscalers you could buy and just keep your 3805, although the cost of some of these scalers is more than some of the new receivers. Unless your TV is capable of 1080P there is no reason to move up to HDMI as the 720P/1080i signal is carried on component cables, which your 3805 has a single output to your TV.

Here is a thread(long) on the subject of 720 vs 1080.

Just to add a thought onto 1080P vs 720P....
I own a Samsung HLS5688 1080P television,& a Mitsubishi HD1000u 720P projector. The tv has a 8 foot viewing distance to a 56" screen, the projector a 12 foot viewing distance to a 96" screen. I have two 1080P sources, my PS3 via HDMI & my 360/hd-dvd combo via vga. To me its a toss up between either in terms of PQ. (to be fair i leave both the ps3 & 360 output at 1080P & let the projector downscale). As far as im concerned, the only thing HDMI does for me is free up my other component input for my wii. Oh & i have 20/15 vision.
I really wouldnt think of the hdmi as an upgrade, just an extra port to plug stuff into.
