I guess the subject says it all. So I was wondering if anyone has this combination of reciever and speakers, how do you set it up? I know the speakers are "bookshelfs", but they sure don't act like them. They reminde me of a chihuahua, they don't know their own size and take on anything bigger than them if needed. But they certainly aren't "small" either. So would yall find either setting appropriate? Or, is the "large" setting a bit much for them to handle?

I am assuming you have a subwoofer, but I think the conventional wisdom with this set-up is to set the M22's to small, and crossover at 80hz. I use this with my M22's and HK AVR520 and it works great. As long as you have a sub, the M22's are best left at small, while allowing the sub to take care of the low end.

m22 fronts; vp100; QS8's (three of them) and the ep350. all fueled by the hk525.

Play with the crossover at both 80 and 60. Both sound pretty good.

I don't have M22s, but I do have an H/K 525. I set my speakers at small, with a bass cutoff at 60 Hz and the sub crossover at 80 Hz. The advantage to small with the 525 is that you can adjust both of those independantly. With large, it's all one setting.

As I understand it, your speakers don't cut out until 60Hz, but the sub plays all the way up to 80Hz? That doesn't make sense to me. You'll get an unnatural hump (or reinforcement) in the bass response between 60Hz and 80Hz with your x-overs set unequally.

Do you prefer the bass coming from the passive subs in your Ensemble 1's to the bass coming from your powered sub?

It just sounded right to me. I'll probably tweak it some more. I have a feeling the Enseble 1 subs roll off at some point, and rather have the roll off overlap with the powered sub. On the other hand, playing "Down from the Mountain" last night, the bass was incredibly overpowering, even at low volume levels. I had to change a bunch of stuff. I wonder if one of the cats has been messing with my sub volume...

Remember that a x-over point is not a brick wall and there will be some natural overlap on both sides. Give it a shot and see if it improves anything.

Dave, although the M22s aren't bad in the mid-bass(I use them in a setup without a sub), the EP350 is better and should handle the bass up to a frequency where the sub can't be localized. That's likely to be 80hz. So, set all speakers "small" and although the 525 provides for different crossovers for the different speakers, use 80hz for all of them. Since the EP350 doesn't have provision for bypassing its internal crossover, turn it all the way up so as to get it as far out of the way of the 525 crossover as possible. Looking at your picture, I'd think that the left corner might be a better location for the sub and would allow a lower level setting.

I don't know about that left corner. It looks like there's a staircase on the left wall. If anything, I'd recommend moving the sub closer to the right corner. Or yet again, it might already be in a location that makes the bass sound great from the couch/chair.
