Just be glad you're on the Axiom board and not Candlepower Forums (www.candlepowerforums.com/vb). The worst we'll do is tell you to get the 60s... or maybe the 80s...

... but when you ask "should I get A or B" on CPF, the standard answer is always "get them both !!".

Seriously, if you're going to be listening to a fair amount of so-so-quality content (eg. FM radio counts as so-so these days) you might find the M50s actually sound better -- they're a bit more tolerant of bad recordings and media. In most other respects, the M60s have the edge in clarity and ability to play at higher volumes but honestly the difference in sound seems to be pretty small.

Disclaimer -- I have not had a chance to A/B 50s against 60s, just M2, M3, M40 and M60, but by comparing notes with others who had heard 50s against 3s, 50s against 40s etc... we were able to assemble a pretty good picture of how all the models compare.

M60s would not be overkill in your current room, unless the layout forced you to stick 'em right against the back wall (remember the 60s are a bit deeper than the 50s).

You really will be happy with either of them, but the specific symptoms of your ailment seem to include going "what if..." for the rest of your life if you don't get the higher model. That's how we end up with M60s, QS8s and VP150s when in truth a model or two lower might have been fine.

John I couldn't help myself I had to check out that link, people actually collecting flashlights is one of the craziest things I think I have ever seen. I mean WTF are you gonna do with a $500.00 flashlight

Did you check out how busy the board was ? That's what I find frightening...

The normal thing to do with a $500 flashlight seems to be to put it in a drawer between the $400 flashlight and the $600 flashlight.

The answer to "why collect flashlights" is pretty simple -- other than the helpful "Buy them both" advice from the other CPF board members. Flashlight modifications have evolved to both an insane and a highly useful level, and the resulting "insane" levels of performance are now showing up on a regular basis in commercial lights as well.

Your typical 2 or 3 "D" cell flashlight (say a Maglight) might consume a couple of watts and put out 20 lumens on fresh batteries. With a few mods, you can get 200-800 lumens from the same light which is REALLY HONKIN' BRIGHT and surprisingly useful when you live out in the sticks.

Of course you can go to Costco and pick up a 2000+ lumen HID spotlight for not very much money.

What caught my eye, though, was some of the really "out of control" modifications, such as tacking a 747 landing light on the front of a Maglight for roughly 12,000 lumens.

I guess I shouldn't post my sig line from CPF...

Mag85, MagCharger60, Mag 2D WA1111, Mag2D ROP low, Mag 3D w. 5x1/2D + MagNumStar 4cell (infinitely bright, infinitely tiny beam), MagLED 2D, MagLED 4D, SureFire Z2, Streamlight Scorpion LED, Fenix L1D-CE, CPF Safe light.

I knew a guy once who got all excited when he could finally buy and LED flashlight for like $50. I think it had to do more for the camping aspect but really, when we go camping about the only time we need a flashlight was trying to get to the bathroom without breaking a leg or flashing it in the cooler to see what kind of beer is left. Didn't think the LED made any difference...but then again I probably was drunk... lol

I should have added that the 60's would definitley have to be about 5 inches from the wall. I would not be able to put them any closer. Because the 50's are two inches less in depth that gives me 7inches from the wall. Is 5 inches too close to the wall or is that enough breathing room?

The 50's are a very nice speaker and to me seemed liked the produced a little more bass than the 60's. The extra mid driver in the 60's seems to blend the whole sound so the bass doesn't stand out as much. Sorry, it's tough to describe.

You'll be more than happy with either but the "what if" will always plague your thoughts. As for the distance to the back wall a minimum of 4" is suggested. Of course, until you get them in your room and play with placement you won't know for sure. I found mine very easy to place and haven't noticed much of a difference moving them around. If too close to the back wall and the side wall then yes, an increase in bass wgich gets overstated though.

Good luck

Well I left Noreen an email. I have a couple of questions to ask and depending on the answers I'll make my decision.

This site has become the first site I check everyday. I think it has to do with the fact that everyone here is so friendly and helpful. Attitude is checked at the door upon entry. I wish more sites were like this one.

Can anyone who has either the m50 or m60 tell me how far from the floor is the bottom port? I was just talking to a friend and he reminded me that my dog might do some investigative work on my speakers. I'm thinking the bottom port and or woofer on the M60 might be within his reach. Although I could probably keep the covers on when I'm not home and simply take them off when I am.

I'm telling you everything thing I have has to be puppy proofed at the moment. My guy is 10months old and is very very curious.

Couldn't you cage train your dog, I am a firm believer in it.

Well leaving a dog in a cage from 7am to 5pm is far too long in my opinion. If it was for say 5hrs or less then I'd have no problem. I think if I leave the covers on it shouldn't be a problem.

On my M60s, the binding posts are at the bottom on the back and the lower of the two rear ports is a couple of feet off the ground. On the front the port is maybe 11" off the ground under the very bottom of the grill, and the woofer is just above that.

Unless your dog is a wire-chewer I don't think you need to worry. The port is deep enough to keep out all but the most determined cat paws. You can consider it dog-proof.

Agree that 10 hours is a long time in a cage, although for a puppy it's a long time even with the run of the house. I had pretty good luck finding neighbors who would stop in and let them out for a few minutes -- your dog looks like one the neighbors would be happy to look after.

I managed to find a cage big enough to fit any two nephews or all the dogs in the neighborhood, so while it ain't cozy at least it ain't cramped... and if they *do* have to go in the crate they can go at one end and have lots of room in the other end. I wouldn't leave my dogs in the traditional training crate for that long, but if you get a bigger cage then it's more like "restricting them to part of the house".
