Just letting you all know that I finally ordered a projector for my basement, I have been borrowing a SD projector (480P) for about 2 months now.
I ordered the Sanyo Z5 (720p native) for a price that I almost bought the Z4 for about 2 months ago. Crazy times in this tech savvy world. I really can't wait to see what it will look like compared to my current SD projector, where the pixels can be seen pretty easily in some scenes. I was concerned even with the Z5 for pixelation, and almost considered going 1080p, but I can buy about 2 or 3 Sanyo Z5's for the price of the 1080p projector I want...just not worth it. I sit about 1.5x the screen width right now.
Combined with my M2 centes on order, I am a pretty excited guy...I just to keep telling myself that I DON'T need an external amp! I'll post my impressions once the projector arrives (should be on monday), I expect a stellar performance from it, and I will wait in anticipation.

Congrats! I have a Z3 and Sirquack has a Z2. We've both been very happy with them, but that product line has REALLY boomed lately with great contrast ratios and big improvements in brightness.
Let us know how it works out for you. As well as what screen you go with.

Congrats on your new projector! I've heard nothing but good things about the Z5 and I'm sure you're going to love it. I just upgraded and purchased a new projector myself. I sold off my PT-AE900U a few weeks ago and today I went out and purchased the Epson Powerlite Pro Cinema 1080 along with the Rotel RB-1080 amp. Again congrats on your new projector, post some pics if you can.

Sounds like a great projector. You are going to love it, I am sure. It may be blasphemy around here, but the biggest kick I get out of my basement HT is my HD projector, followed by the Axioms.

I have a Z2 and I love it! I'm trying to convince my wife to let me upgrade to a Z5 (looking at how it's going so far I might have to ask for a Z6...) I hope you enjoy your purchase thoroughly!

Well, I have a completely light controlled room, so I actually just went with blackout cloth stretched over the back of a home made frame. It has worked great with my current loaner, and with the black front wall, the picture stands out completely. I'll keep the blackout cloth unless it really doesn't do well at all.

Backout cloth works great. I used some of it tacked to the wall until I built a frame and used the same kind of fabric Sirquack used for his screen. There is some difference but nothing huge.

how much was that frabric you guys are using? Stretching the blackout cloth on my frame sure did screw up the frame, it is not square anymore, because of the pressure of the stretched blackout cloth...Its my fault tho, I stretched it so much that the frame couldn't handle the pressure.
I then screwed it to the wall to make sure that it stays...has been good so far...

It's actually screen fabric made by Dazian. I bought it on their ebay front. I got the Dazian matte white, the price varies since they sell specific pieces of fabric (they do sell by the yard on their regular website but it's a little more expensive).

Robb, check out the DIY screen forum at AVS. It's awesome. It made me want to build a screen and I don't even have a projector.

You have no idea how much I have looked at the DIY screen forum...probably at least over 15 hours of research (which is how I came up with the blackout cloth idea).
Thanks for the suggestion, it is a huge resource of information that is usefull for anyone looking to build a DIY screen...
I went through a "paint a screen" stage before going to blackout cloth, much cleaner and easier to make IMHO.

Well, the projector is in...impressions will be posted tomorrow...trying to decide what to watch tonite to cristen the projector...Either Batman Begins or The Matrix will be played I think!
WOW, this projector is HUUUUUGE compared to my loaner BenQ office projector...I am thinking I will be blown away by the picture quality, even just be judging on the shear size of the thing!! I think its at least 1.5x bigger than the current projector in my basement.

Hey guys, I have been debating for a while weather to get a projector or not. I have a hitachi ultravision 65 in that I got a few years ago. The picture quality on it is very nice, but as everyone knows BIGGER IS BETTER!!!! Questions I have about it are this. I have actually built a theater room in my basement that I have wired for a projector mount to the ceiling, but I am kinda scared that a projector may not have the same quality picture as the tv. My room is completely light controlled. I can either turn the light all the way on or dim them to any level. I have also thought about the z5 and the panny 100ax. How does a projector compare to this tv's color saturation, black levels. My seating position is about 19ft. back from the wall. I was thinking a 106 inch screen would be about right. With that size screen could I use a Z5 with the lights on for tv watching or would I have to go with the panny. Also, is there much difference in sharpness between a 1080p projector such as the epson and the z5 or panny. I am asking in reference to HD DVD/ blu ray material. If it is a noticable diff I may wait a little longer for the epson prices to come down even more. Ok, out of all of the questions, I am most concerned to know if projectors can give a very comparible picture to the 65in crt ultravision I already have. Thanks for everyone's input ahead of time.

all I know is that my Z5 properly calibrated looks like a giant plasma on my wall...:)
I am projecting a 92" image, seated from 10 feet. I see no SDE at all.

Robb, congrats and have fun with the new toys, it sounds like you need some M80's to go with that giant screen.

Heh, my budget is officially depleted...the wife wouldn't even give it a second thought if I suggested to upgrade to something...nope! I'll take some pics of the Z5 and such when I get a chance. I am only projecting a 480i image (letting the projector upconvert to 720p) and it looks amazing. I am going to save up for the Toshiba HD-A2 (or HD-A3 depending on when I get it ). I WAS going to buy the Oppo 981, in Canada for me it would come to $300, on ebay, I can get an HD-A2 for $350...the upconverting DVD players era is coming to an end, when the HD-DVD players start coming to the $200-$250 mark, all those DVD players will be completely obsolete. Black levels are just simply amazing on the Z5, I can't believe how deep the blacks are.

I just bought the Toshiba HD-XA2 and love it, they were originally over $900.00 I got mine for $549.00, in a couple of months they will probably be going for $400.00. I've seen the HD-A2 as low as $309.00 on eBay.
