I currently own a VP150. I recently purchase the Algonquins outdoor speaker and decided to try one of them as center speaker in my HT. I was very impressed with the dialouge and sound that these speakers produced compared to my VP150. I was curious to see if Axiom ever experimented or test a version of the VP center speaker with a 6.5 woofer and rear port??

Oooh, we haven't had this discussion in months!

To public knowledge, no. I imagine there's been some internal testing, but you'll have to pry it out of Alan or Ian with a crowbar.

Every so often we lobby for a "VP250", ie an M60 with the drivers re-arranged -- woofers at each side, midrange and tweeter arranged vertically in the middle.

Instead we got Algonquin outdoor M3s and some cool subwoofers. I can live with that.

I'd buy that! I've never heard a VP150 (so maybe I should just be quiet), but a higher end center (and not to say that the VP150 is bad either) is always welcome news to me.

Joe,

Do you sit dead center during your listening or also to the sides? I'd be curious to hear from you what you think about the off-centre performance of the Algonquin when used as a centre.

With my 150, I can sit as much as 60 degrees off centre, 10 feet away with no loss in understandability or imaging.

The last time i tested the centre channel width, i went from left to right, at about a 11 foot distance and shuffled across 17 feet (about 8 feet left and right of centre) before i could hear any obvious or gross off axis effects from the VP150.
It was a bit easier with pink noise but still incredibly good.

I wish they would come out with a 6.5 center. My vertical and inverted M3 looks a little goofy standing on top of my TV looking like a big ol' high rise down in the projects.

It sounds great though and covers our entire seating area with no noticeable gaps.

Joe, basically the Algonquin is an M3 modified for outdoor use, and it's often been suggested to use a bookshelf(M2,M3, even M22)as a center speaker. You didn't mention if you used it oriented vertically, which would have good dispersion to each side. If it was placed horizontally the pattern wouldn't be symmetrical.

Chess and Mo, actually it's 54.3 degrees(I used my abacus).

I use M3s (one above and one below, both horizontal) for centers. Love them.

After my M80s, my favorite speaker is the M3. I now own 3 pair.

How are they oriented? Is one tweeter on the left and the other on the right?

Curious, is anyone using say m3's or m22's as a center matched with m60's or m80's?

Exactly, but I found no difference if both were oriented the same way.

M3 centers with M80 mains here.

Alan pm'd me that they would be a match.

Doug thanks...I'm curious, did you ever try a vp100 or 150 prior to using m3's? I'm curious about a comparison of m3/80's or m22/80's or vp150/80's....

I'm also curious about this. When I move my setup to the basement, I won't have my TV on a stand, but mounted on the wall, so I'll have room for a vertical center. I won't have room for a full M80, however, so I'd like to try a bookshelf. I like the VP150 all right, but of course I'm always after that little bit extra.

My original setup was 60s with the 150. I changed out the 60s for 80s in the 30 day period. It was 6 months or more before I had the funds to buy the M3s. I was just testing and bought the pair because I knew I could use them elsewhere in the house if I didn't like their sound as a center. I liked the sound of the M3 and two M3s even better above and below the tv.

Just in the last two months I contacted Amie and traded the 150 for another pair of M3s and bought the Outdoor model at the same time.

I recently got some M3's and think they sound great, but I find that they have a real tonal difference from the rest of my system. I'm guessing you don't or you wouldn't be using them?

I thought that the M2 was supposed to be a better match for the 22's, 60's & 80's??

I’ve tried M3’s paired with M80’s and then the M22’s with the M80’s. Either I’m tone deaf or there was no difference. They both sound / blend very well with the M80’s. The biggest issue I had was their placement. Too close together and the center channel sucked any where but right in front of the speaker. Too far away from each other and the center channel dialogue became confusing to me. At around 30” apart from each other, the center channel sounds great at all locations of the room.

I’ve been considering swapping out the M22’s with two VP150’s for no better reason than curiosity. One below and one above the screen but I’ve got better things to blow money on right now.

The use of M3 as center matches quite well with my mains. Yeah M50s are close alright.

I'm using a single M3 vertical and inverted on top of our 65" Mits, but sometimes it gets rather easy to localize up there. I could snuggle a W3 below the screen inside an indentation of the TVs bodywork where the top edge of the speaker would be on the same plane as the lower edge of the screen and it may work well as long as the M3 and W3 play well together. The W3 would be placed horizontally and hopefully the M3 on top as well.

Orientation of the tweeters would of course be trial and error in a horribly reflective and hideously sucky listening room.

When I first setup my theatre, I had M22 mains, and M3's above and below the screen.

I have since switched out the M3s for M2s, and I must say, I love the brutal honest nature of the M2. I love the M3s too, but really only for stand alone stuff with no sub. If I have a sub, the M2s are my pick. They are an amazing little speaker.

Mdrew, I know that you are used to your M22s, but I would really suggest trying out some M2s vertically mounted above and below the screen. In your room, you will probably not even notice a difference from the M22 centres (especially if you do not notice a difference with the M3s vs the M22s). And to boot, the M2s have a much smaller footprint than the M3s, and actually don't look that bad when mounted above and below, i'll try and take some more pics and update my website.

I have about the same size room as you (14x16 here).

I have a couple of Axiom made 6.5" center channel speakers.

This is a picture of a modified Merak MC634 which was made by Axiom. This MC634 is interesting in that I swapped out the original 6.5" carbon fiber type drivers and replaced them with aluminum Axiom 6.5s from the M3/M40/M50/M60/M80 etc. Although I thought the original Axiom 3/4" titanium tweeter was excellent (previously used in the Mzeros and M2Tis as well as Meraks) I persuaded the cabinet to accept a tweeter from a Reference 3a de capo mm speaker. Like the M3s, these center channel speakers allow the 6.5's to run free. I modified the cross-over for the tweeter to about 2200Hz. I love this speaker.

I also operated on an Axiom made MC6H center speaker.

This center channel illegitimate step cousin to an Axiom one is based on the Merak MC6H which used a horn tweeter and a pair of carbon fiber like 6.5s. So, I swapped out the Merak 6.5s with a pair of Axioms, modified the cross-over and, although I do not mean to sound immodest, I love this speaker also.

The Merak cabinet uses an anti-standing wave shape and is well made. I've compared these to the VP100 (have not had the chance to compare them to the VP150) and IMO, the modified Axiom made 6.5s sound better for dialogue, music, and blowing things up than their smaller though legitimate step cousins.

Restless Leg Syndrome? That's nice Pmbko.

Anyway, as to the topic issue of an Axiom center channel with 6.5" drivers, I'm using 2 of them, have actual experience with them, and think they're terrific.

I placed one of my Algonquin horizontally on top of my TV in the same location my VP150 would be. The Algonquin sounded very nice compared to a sometimes boxy sound of my VP150. The Algonquin sounded very clean. I'm wondering if it was because of the rear port the Algonquin has

Why don't you drill a 3" diameter hole in your VP150 and shove a PVC pipe in there to find out? It's real easy to do. Let us know how it sounds as we may want to do it too.

Yeah right!!

Don't want to void any warranty on my VP150 if I hack it.

Wonder if the VP150 was tested with a port or not by Axiom. Maybe someone from Axiom can comment on this.

I *think* this subject came up a year or two ago and someone from Axiom responded. The gist of it was that a ported speaker could play lower but a sealed speaker could handle higher power and higher audio output in the freq ranges which did matter for a center channel. Again, this is only vague recollection so it's possible the post did not come from someone at Axiom.

Also, it just occurred to me that the reason Axiom may not be using 6.5" woofs in the center channels is that the larger cone makes for poorer off-axis response. According to Alan (again, IIRC, YMMV etc.) the poorer HF off axis response of the 6.5" woof is why the M3/M40/M50 have a slightly more laid-back sound than the M2/M22/M60/M80.
