Is it possible to purchase a component set that will produce better sound than the Denon 3808CI in the same price range? If so, what are your suggestions?

Also, is there a huge difference in sound between the m60 and m80? I know this is all relative, but is it worth the extra $ for the m80's? I have a smaller room, but I may be moving them to the basement(bigger) down the road.

Ah, here we go. The argument about receiver sound quality.

There is debate over this on the boards, but I think it's fairly safe to say that if you are sticking with receivers, barring different processing, equalization, and tone controls, the sound quality at that level is pretty much equal across the board.

If you're looking at outboard amps, then the debate gets a little murkier, and a lot depends on how loud you are going.

Sheesh, while I was typing for your other thread you went and started this one. Are you getting any deals for the Denon, a refurb or something like that?

Sorry about the new thread. I figured everyone lost interest in the other one.

I called Denon to ask them about the debate over Authorized dealer as opposed to non-authorized and they said if you buy the receiver from most places, they will warranty the receiver for 2 years. The exception being anything coming out of Brooklyn, NY. He said there are certain companies they will just not deal with. That said, I asked him about the wholesale company selling the 3808 for $500 less than retail and he said anything off of Amazon is covered by the full warranty. So, to answer your question, yes I am getting a pretty good deal, but it is NIB, not refurb or B stock.

So, anyone out there have a preference between the M60 or M80 as there is nowhere I can go to listen to these?

I definitely prefer the 80s. How big is your room (H, W, L)?

As I said in the other thread, I now have the M80s instead of the M60s

My room is 15'6" x 10'6"

M22s and a sub will fill that size nicely, my area is 16x12 and open to another 16x12 in an 'L' configuration. My M22s, VP100, and QS8s did the job extremely well. I just recently decided I wanted a little more fuller sound, so went to the M60s but they were not quite what I was looking for coming from the M22s. The M80s, after a quick listen at Mojo's, was closer to what I was accustomed to.

I think the M60s combined with your smaller area will be amazing. They were very impressive in my area. Had I not heard the M22s I know I would have been amazed at the sound from the M60s.

Let's make it easy, if the extra money for the M80s isn't a problem, nor the extra height and depth then get them. If any of these are a problem get the M60s. You will not be disappointed by either.

My room is about the same size (slightly bigger) and I was leaning toward the m80's. How did the m22's sound compared to the m80's in your room? Now I'm thinking the 80's might be overkill for the size of the room they'll be in. What do you think?

The M22s are great. They sound quite similar to the upper end on the M80s, but do lack the warmth of the lower mid range when paired up with a sub. The sub will give you that nice low end but will still not add that warmth of the lower mid range. There really is no substitute for a full range floorstander. Now that I have the M80s I wouldn't want any less for my main HT area. I have my M22s for my secondary listening area9my main living room and they are hooked up to a 12 yr old Sony STRD 915 and with the low boost activated they sound really good.
