Just posting a FYI that Toshiba has just released a new firmware upgrade for their HD-DVD players. I just upgraded and it went quite smoothly. Can't say there are any obvious changes but I trust Toshiba has improved something.

Looks like the latest is 2.8 from what I can tell. The last one I updated to was 2.7.

One thing that I've noticed with our A2 is that whenever I hit the 'Stop' then 'Setup' menu to manually input the aspect ratio of the screen ( ), regardless of where it may be in the movie, it always starts at the very beginning of the disc for all HD DVDs. I'd like to see the aspect ratio change automatically on these players. Also.. If y'all remember a while back I was having problems with our A2 skipping and losing the picture, well low and behold it did the same thing after the 2.7 firmware update and also while Wid (Rick) and his wife were here with us watching a movie ... he said he'd never seen his do that so we took my old player back to Wal-Mart to swap it out for a new unit and the new component has worked flawlessly every since. Obviously we just got a bad A2 from jump street.

At least now you know how to rip the update to cd Rick is right, while watching a movie with him an his wife the picture on his A2 just dropped out. Mine has never done this. I'm glad to hear your new player is still doing good.

It looks like an A2/A20 and not a A3/A30/A35 update.

A35 is on 1.3. I believe we are discussing different model Toshiba HD players

I am upgrading my a2 right now via ethernet.
I just got doen watching italian job (one of my 5 freebies) and it skipped/slowed down/had a bunch of fragments or something. The disc is brand new, not a scratch or a smudge on it.
Hopefully I am not experiencing some of the skipping that rickf is talking about

Hopefully I am not experiencing some of the skipping that rickf is talking about Terzaghi don't be surprised if it is a bad disc. Our brand new Bourne Ultimatum disc did the very same thing and as a last resort I took the disc back to the store and replaced it with another new Ultimatum disc, problem solved! All along I was believing it was the player ... which after everything was said and done it did indeed turn out to be a bad player but the repeated problem with the player was that it would drop the picture and go to a blue screen for a few seconds at a time. We just picked up The Italian Job and watched it yesterday, great flick. Hope you get your problem taken care of. Also... Anybody who has uploaded the new 2.8 firmware onto these players, can you tell any difference at all? I'll do the upgrade after I get home from work today, now that I know how ... thanks Rick!

From Toshiba's website: This firmware update improves support for 1080p/24Hz OUTPUT and auto mode(for HD-A20 and HD-XA2), improves network connectivity supporting the download of web-enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba. In addition, this firmware update provides High Bit Rate Audio functionality for the HD-XA2 player. When integrated through the HDMI connection to a 7.1 capable multi-channel A/V receiver, High Bit Rate Audio has the potential to offer the latest in high definition surround sound. Full details of the 2.8 firmware package So it is a little vague in the benefit, but that doesn't mean that it isn't important or significant. FYI. It took me over 20 minutes to update via ethernet last night. It is about 50MB, but I have a pretty fast internet connection. It does take time, that's for sure.
