Actually SDDS, the Sony theatrical digital sound system is somewhat like that. I learned about it when I interviewed the person who over saw the English sound mix for Godzilla 2000. He explained how the sound mix released on home video was different from the SDDS version - it need to be slightly altered for Dolby 5.1. which had 3 speaker locations behind the screen (LCR) while SDDS has Left, Left Center, Center, Right Center, and Right
Both Dolby Digital and SDDS have subs behind the screen as well.
