I am just starting to setup my epic 80 500 with my denon 3808.
axiom recommends setting the crossover to 40 on the m80. Does that mean that I have to set the same number on my denon?
Is the idea to match the two or I just need to set it on the receiver and then do bypass(150 on sub) on the sub?
Thank you

You want to manage the crossover for all your speakers on the receiver settings. If you have an older 500, put this on bypass, otherwise crank it clockwise to the highest setting to get it out of the way for the receiver to manage.
I've always used and 80hz crossover across the board, as to me it is the comprimise for HT and music applications. Not sure I've heard Axiom say they recommend 40hz?
Now, for music many bump down the receiver crossover on the 80's to say 60hz. Also, leave each speaker set to "small" in the receiver.

Does the 3808 have independent crossovers?

From what I've read I think it does, but I'd like to know for sure from someone who has one. Very important feature to me.

Yes, the 3808 has independent crossovers. My suggestion would be to run the Audyssey and see how it sounds then make adjustments from there.
I have the 3808 and I adjusted the Audyssey settings to this, my M80s at 40, VP150 at 60 and QS8s at 80 and I really like it. Then again I have a poor sub so that could be why I need more output from my speakers. The program set them to M80s at 40, VP150 at 60 and QS8s at 60 too. I have a poor sub so this could be why I need more output from the speakers than most.
It took me awhile to get used the settings (EQ and freq.). After awhile I started to notice I could hear some things better than before but some other sounds lost a little as the Eq did its job.

A rule of thumb I use for crossovers on ported speakers is 24 db above their low rating. So for a M80 at 34 (+/-3db), I would tend to look at something around 60 initially. Keep in mind, most crossovers are sloped. Your M80 will still be receiving some signal below 60. What will not be happening is material below 34 staying with the M80.

Axiom's recommendation of 40hz is for when you do not have bass management on your receiver and you end up with full range on both your M80s and the EP500.
Since most receivers have bass management nowadays (even good stereo receivers), the recommendation applies less and less and Axiom might want to look into adding a section to that effect in their manual as this has brought confusion to many.

The 3808 can assign different crossovers for each channel (but it does not have 50 hz ) I have my m80's set to 60 hz, my vp150 set to 80 hz, my surrounds set to 100 hz, and lfe set to 100 hz. These were someones reccomendations (jakewash maybe????). They actually reccmonded putting the m80's to 50 hz but I did not have that option. And the neat thing is I just now pulled all that info up from my computer by typing in the ip address of my 3808 and looking at the settings from IE

I have to look at the manual for the independent speaker crossover configuration . I just saw the subwoofer config.
