Anyone see the new Mitsubishi 82 inch RP-Liquid Crystal on Silicon ? #WL-82913..
Talk about braggin rights, this is reported to be the largest mass produced RP set ever.. Oh yeah, it's called the Alpha.. As in Alpha male ?? Seems fitting..
So, LCoS.. Seems to be the way things are going ? Toshiba, Sony, now Mits..
Anyone heard good or bad things about this technology ? Would appear to have all the good of RP sets, without the bad.. And, no expensive bulb to replace every year.. (A little dig on the FP owners)
So what's the down side ? Gotta be one, right ? COST ??

Don't lose hope just yet Craig, weren't LCD/Plasma screens about 20 Gs when they first came out? They're 1/2 or 1/3 of that now.

Of course if you wait 2 years, there'll just be something new out there. Better just buckle down and buy one right now.

That's ridiculous! Why pay $20k when you can easily have a 100"+ picture on a high quality screen if you go with FP?

I'd sooner buy a car than spend $20k on a TV. What is this world coming to?

LCoS is coming on strong though. So many more models coming out all the time. Has anyone ever seen one, or better yet own one?

I'm still a long way off from buying a new TV. Money needs to be saved up, and I'd still like to wait and see where all this new technology ends up. There are waaay too many different formats right now trying to replace CRT. And with HD-DVD on the horizon, I want to be sure my next TV can accept a full HD-DVD signal. (What ever that ends up being)

The longer I wait, the cheaper it will be, and the "safer" my purchase will be.

LOL. Nice take on the tube thread. I'm interested in who on this forum you'd label as which candidate in that debate..

At that price level, aren't there some ridiculous 1080p projectors as well? I can't really fathom why I'd spend that kind of money on an RPTV. I'd assume anyone that can afford a 20G TV can have some electronic blinds installed. I suppose someone might prefer to be able to watch a screen big as hell with the lights on in which case it may be preferable but at $20G, I want a movie theater.

I have the Sony VPL-HS10 front projector, and I've been very happy with it. I laugh when people drool over a little 82" TV. Sony's HS-20 will be available soon, and is supposed to be Very Nice.

Well, what can I say ? I have the room, I have the money, and I have the time.. Ohhhh yeah, and I have a loving wife that lets me spend my money and time on things that I like to do.. (She does shake her head at me quite a lot ??)
Will I spend that much on a RP, no.. But that wasn't the thought behind my original post.. I was more just interested in info on the LCoS technology.. Pros / Cons, that sort of thing..
I save on the cash, by doing all the remodel work on the rooms (framing, ele, floors, finish work) myself.. Leaves me enough green to pay for the gear I can't build..
Hmmmmmm ?? Electronic blinds ??? Naaaah.. I already have full length theater curtains that draw back.. Blinds would be too modern for my decor.. But thanks for thought..

From what I've been reading on LCos, when working properly it's the best looking TV ever. But many of the early models have had numerous issues. Do a search on AVS for "Toshiba LCOS". There's a lenghthy discussion.

Seriously, $20K will almost get you Sony's SXRD-based full-HD (1920x1080) front projector, the Qualia 004 -- which not only will project MUCH bigger image, but also boasts 2000:1 contrast ratio. Incidentally, SXRD is Sony's own version of LCoS-like reflective LCD technology.

Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of, Sushi. Were I to invest this much money in a screen, that's absolutely the way I'd go.

Laugh ? There's no laughing in home theater !
Is your HS10 hanging or table mounted ? Noise level ?
I'm really going back and forth on the RP FP deal.. I have some time, as I'm re-working the room, so that leads to a lot of what-ifs..
I have yet to view a FP set up, but I believe I have the right accomodations for one.. 12 foot wide front wall, 21 feet of floor space, vaulted ceiling running long way, etc, etc.. I like the idea of that big screen, but not the idea of replacing an expensive bulb.. And, there's that screen issue to deal with.. Highly reflective or not, roll up or not, etc..
Say, do these screens hold up ? Do they scratch easy ? Like I said, I've never seen one up close and personal..

$20k is crazy. I think this was as much a marketing ploy as anything. How many other times have we had a thread about a Mits tv around here?

I think it's a very small club that we belong to MIKEY. My lovley wife is also very tolerent of my little "audio sickness".
And I know what you mean about the "head shaking" but it's always with a smile. Ain't life grand!

I was going to wait and see if HDTV was actually going to happen before buying a big screen, but I could care less about HD right now.

I went ahead and bought the cheap-a@@ Phillips HDTV in old 4:3, and couldn't be happier. Picture is huge and WAY BETTER than that of my 2 yr old 36" JVC. With the old shape I do not have to sacrifice picture quality when viewing 4:3 TV signals (stretch, zoom, etc..), for DVDs the progressive scan picture is superb and over 53" diagonally, and if HD signals ever become the norm I'll be able to take advantage of those as well (shrinking the picture down to 57" or so). Only complaint I have is the gray cabinet and the dark gray material that covers the speakers - black on black would have looked much better in the daylight.

And if I need to upgrade down the line (who knows what technology will be here in a few years) I won't have so much $ invested that it pisses off the wife. And I'm sure you all will agree: ANY TV you buy today is sure to be obsolete within 10 years.

Mikey,

My projector is hanging from the ceiling. The HS10 is one of the louder HT projectors, and it is audible during quiet passages. It's not loud enough to bother me though. My screen has been mounted for 8 months or so, and looks exactly like it did the day it was mounted. It isn't *perfectly* flat, but that's one of the drawbacks to an untensioned pull-down screen.

If you think you might like a front projection system, you really owe it to yourself to check one out before you buy a rear-projection set. I've very glad that I went the FP route.

And just to remind you... $4200 will get you a VERY nice front projector + screen, too!

Well... "Cat" in Japanese is "neko" which literally means a "sleepy little one."

I gotta lend it to the Japanese. They can sure fit a lot of meaning into a few letters.
