Strange issue with HDMI. When I plug my PS3 directly into the plasma (Samsung), everything works fine. When I plug it into the yammie rxv-1800, the sound is fine, but the samsung complains about "unsupported mode" and gives no picture.

I've replaced the cable [to clarify, the cable from the PS3], but it didn't change anything. Video from the mac mini has no problem.

Thoughts?

Regards,
David

I see the error "Unsupported Mode" with my Sony Media Center PC to Sony XBR2, though my PS3 works great connected to the LCD.
I use optical out for sound. The error goes away when i reboot the PC. Have not been able to figure it out.

there were some issues i read about before with one of the onkyo models and the ps3, but not sure if there is some issue with the ps3 and your receiver or not.

Have you tried using a different hdmi input on the receiver?

Sounds like a "handshake" issue. The problem sometimes occurs (and will go away) depending on the order in which devices are turned on. After turning on the Yammy, have you tried recycling the PS3 off and on? Does that do anything? Also, make sure that you aren't trying to send a 1080p signal through component cables (downscaling using the Yammy). Not sure if downscaling to HDMI will cause problems.

Thats my first reaction. Unfortunately, a number of manufacturers don't seem to like using strait forward language when there are handshake issues.

MS Media center gives me bs about the video card being tied up by another resource. MS Media player says there is a problem with HDMI. Unfortunately this is all with standard def DVDs. Fortunately it dosn't happen very often. A reboot solves the problem.

Hi Avi,

Didn't realise the PS3 had optical out for sound. Do you know if you can play SACDs using the optical out? I got the impression from another thread that this only worked with HDMI output . . .

David

As Capn_Pickard suggested try turning the PS3 off and back on again. And as terzaghi said try another HDMI input on the reciever, preferably one that is already working properly with another device.

Since the PS3 works when connected directly to the TV make sure you don’t have the receiver set to alter the video signal. Make sure you have the latest firmware updates for the receiver. Also if the PS3 auto-detects the resolution of the display try manually setting it to a resolution/mode you know the TV supports.

Everything I have read says SACD on the PS3 requires the use of the HDMI out. Although I have never tested it otherwise.

Tried bouncing the PS3, didn't fix it. And the yammie connects to the plasma with HDMI.

Tried different HDMI inputs on receiver, to no avail.

Since my replacement M60 (previous damaged in transit) arrived \:D I've set up all of my home theatre (wonderful! first DVD was Blues Brothers in surround). I ran the auto setup (YPAO?) and it made the same problem happen with the mac! Had to reboot the mac twice before it all came right.

David

Will check out firmware upgrades to both. Tried setting receiver to 1080p - which the Samsung supports, but didn't solve the problem.

David

You really should try at least one. Dark Side of the Moon, is an excellent first choice because of the 'spacy' music and if nothing else, the added sound effects traveling around your room will demonstrate the difference of multi-channel music to even a person of little to no audio interest.

That's been my only experience so far and I don't plan on buying a lot more. Maybe a classical selection or two to see how it enhances the orchestra experience.

So much for firmware upgrades: there are none for the Yammie (outside the US), and when I upgraded the PS3 to 2.42, it hung after the restart. Apparently 2.41-2 were to fix a problem just like this that occurred with 2.40: I hadn't done the 2.40 upgrade, so the gods decided to bite me on 2.42. Off to Sony support. Sigh. At least it's still under warranty.

David
