I need advice on the best sounding reciever for my Epic 80 7.1 System. It will primarily be used for movies. Component video switching and s-video up conversion is something that would be used as well (I am using a projector=limited inputs).

1. Denon 3803
2. NAD T762/T773
3. Yamaha units?
4. Any other serious recommendations?

I only want to hear from people who have used any of the above units with these speakers so a good match can be determined.

Thanks!

Besides the ones you mention, also the Yamaha RX-V1400/2400 or last years models, the RX-V1300/2300.

H/K 525 or 520(I hear the X20 models has qulity control issues, I would stick to X25). Both can be bought directly from H/K refurbed for $400 to $600, depending on if you buy fromt he eBay auctions(can save you an extra $100).

Also, the Pioneer Elite 43Tx can be found for good prices on the net.

Marantz refurbs with 1 year warranty can be found, start with the SR5300 and up.

I dont think the Yamaha RX-V1400 (I have one) will drive the M80's very well but I am not an expert and my experience is with the M60's. I am just posting my findings. Maybe someone can explain this better...

I think there is a huge difference between their advertised figures of 110 Watts per channel X 7 at 8 Ohms and the actual performance.

The Volume setting is from -80db to +15db in increments of 0.5db. Very often, I find that at -20db reading, it is still not that loud. Maybe I am turning deaf.

Basically I am up 65% on the volume control knob and my gut feeling is that at that point, it should be really really loud, but it simply isn't.

I would really like to go a couple of db higher but I am afraid to push the amplifier any further.

I used to have a Yamaha RX-V2095 (1999 model) which was capable of 110 Watts per channel X 5 and I rarely went above 35%-40% on the volume control knob. I once tried to play something at 50% (Red LED at 12 o'clock) and it was way too loud.

I have some generic speaker wire (12 gauge, 504 strand count) running for close to 55-60 feet from the receiver to the M60's. Is it the higher strand count / cable run that is causing the inefficiency or is it the receiver ?

The M80's & VP150 will certainly need better amplification since they are rated 6 Ohms.

Overall, I am very happy with the receiver. My only gripe is the output (so far).

Mahesh, if I'm not mistaken, the volume should almost always be set at 0 dB with your Yamaha because doesn't YPAO also adjust for volume (not just room acoustics) so that 0 dB is peaks of 95 dB with DD and dts content? I wouldn't know (this is just gut intuition), but this is an assumption as I have the "old" Yamaha RX-Z1.

Is not this same thread happening in Home Theater?

I replied there with my thoughts

Mahesh, without going into full detail, there's no "inefficiency" involved in what you've described. I'd be confident that the 1400 could put out more than 110 watts and is at least as powerful as the 2095 was. The relative settings of the volume controls on two different receivers to attain a given sound level is no measure of their power capabilities. A lower powered receiver might well be as loud at a 40% setting as a more powerful one would be at a 60% setting. It's a matter of the gain in the amplifier and the calibration of the volume control. So, if you want -10dB or even more, that's fine.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.
